About the Author
Emilian Kavalski is Associate Professor of Global Studies at the Institute for Social Justice, Australian Catholic University (Sydney). He is currently working on (i) the encounter of International Relations with life in the Anthropocene, especially the conceptualization of and engagement with non-human actors; and (ii) the nascent Asian normative orders and the ways in which they confront, compliment, and transform established traditions, norms, and institutions. A coherent picture of western military ethics education

Professor Paul Robinson of the University of Ottawa has assembled an all-star cast of ethics scholars and teachers from Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Norway, US, Australia, UK, Canada, France and Israel. One of at least four serious international comparative case studies of various aspects of security education, Robinson's collection gives a sense of both the variety and consistency of ethics education in developed, western countries. It would be interesting to explore cultural differences in other linguistic groups - Russian, Spanish/Portuguese, Chinese, for example. Tellingly, the two American chapters focus on single institutions -West Point and USAFA, while most of the other chapters provide a more global overview of how different institutions and organizations fit into the overall plan for conveying ethics and values to military leaders and in at least the German case, the rank and file without distinction.
Ch 3 on West Point and Ch 5 on USAFA explore both philosophical and organizational dimensions. The USAFA chapter is candid about the chaplain-lawyer-leadership-psychology-Character Development Centre competition. The champions seem to have grown like topsy with every scandal--a reflection of too much money, perhaps. Again, smaller institutions seem to fare better, and the Canadian model sounds admirably coherent, although spurred by the same sort of problems. Australia (Ch. 7) also has a coherent ethics program, within which the Australian Defence College (equivalent to Canadian Defence Academy) manages programs for each of the major institutions (ADFA, recruit training, etc). The appendix to this chapter on military ethics case studies is a good example of international learning.
Norway (Ch. 8) aims to "promote good and prevent evil" and military chaplains edit two journals on military ethics. Germany (Ch. 9) is special because there is an overarching philosophy of Innerefuhrung inherited from denazification, and ethics education irrespective of rank, with four main elements in the curriculum: ethics of peace, leadership responsibilities, conscience and obedience, and the soldier's profession. The chapter on France (Ch. 10) focuses on St. Cyr and the École Interarmes, the ethics of serving the state and commitment to republican values, which might be problematic if the republic renews itself regularly. Hude also admits to the anti-intellectualism of the military academy. This is a natural element of military culture (doers privileged over thinkers) but seems both more extreme and less internally criticized in francophone military culture, from what I have seen in the Écoles Nationales de Vocation Régionale in West Africa. My favourite chapter is Peter Olsthoorn's on the NL, which includes a discussion of the problem of ethics being reduced to "not getting caught" - a central issue for rules-based systems which seem to predominate in the Weberian states of the western world. Olsthoorn discusses the problems that follow from attempts to judge intention as well as action, and the difficulties of inculcating virtue. In Israel (Ch. 12) ethics instruction is shaped by the features of the abbreviated educational setting, the heterogenous population (and presumably its hostile environs). Japan (Ch. 13) comes closest to being a non-Western state, and Admiral Ota focuses on the imperial precepts of loyalty, propriety, valour, faithfulness, righteousness, and simplicity, dating back to 1887, the midpoint of the Meiji Restoration, and therefore perhaps drawing on Western as well as traditional influences.
The responses to these case studies are thoughtful and comparative, so the overall achievement of the book is to weave a picture of a surprisingly coherent western military values system, at least for the ten countries represented.

First of all, thank you very much for using my very informal book review of Thomas Ricks' Fiasco for this book, Ethics Education in the Military. I am the Amazon reviewer referred to as "M Vigue". Actually, my name is William Vigue, and I was a Sergeant attached to the 4th Infantry Unit in 2003 and 2004 in Iraq. I have not read your entire book, but read the online excerpt on Colonel Sassaman and your belief that he represented failures in military ethics during the initial Iraq military campaign. While I am neither a military expert, nor ethics expert...my commentary on the Ricks' book (Fiasco) was that he was too quick to blame and make a scapegoat of Colonel Sassaman without really getting a solid background on the complexities of the Area of Operation for the 4th Infantry in 2003-2004. I had read Mr. Ricks' book - Making the Corps, and had admired the author's stance on how the post Vietnam and pre 9/11 military had created an exceptional volunteer force that was made up of poor and lower middle class young men and women in America. I also admired Ricks' contention that many of America's elites of the post WW2/Korea generation had failed to serve, and some had disdain for America's volunteer military in an increasingly dangerous, volatile, and complex pre-9/11 and post Bosnia/Haiti world. Looking back at Making the Corps, I felt that he predicted tensions between a civilian led department of defense that had leaders who hadn't served in combat or any military service for that matter using the fragile all volunteer military inappropriately and as an ultimately disposable tool if need be. Ricks' Making the Corps acknowledged that pre-9/11 American society would be unable to sacrifice to fight necessary and larger scale wars in the future. I think that his observation was dead on and admired his portrayal of the military and the Marine Corps of the time. His book Fiasco surprised me, because I believe that Colonel Nate Sassaman was cut from the same cloth as men that he admired in Making the Corps like future VA Senator James Webb. He commends Webb for making difficult and upcompromising leadership decisions in Vietnam, and heaps praise on Webb's fictional but based on true experiences Fields of Fire.
I do commend your link of Colonel Sassaman to the US Army's "Warrior Ethos". I firmly agree that he was the living, breathing, real deal essence of what the Warrior Ethos was and is for the US Army. Instead of simply echoing Thomas Ricks assumptions about Sassaman. I never saw nor heard of Thomas Ricks even being in theatre during 2003-2004, much less the 4th Infantry's Area of Operation. I wish that Sassaman would have been judged more objectively on your part. I believe the failures in Iraq of that first year (OIF-1) began with the civilian leadership at the top of the DOD and especially at the department of state and their failures with the CPA in Baghdad. It is my opinion that Colonel Sassaman did not set out to become the "warrior king'' as the New York Times and Mr. Filkins would have you think. The 4th Infantry Division was undermanned and undertrained in very complex situational environment and constantly lacked support on from self serving higher military authorities, ie; Colonel Rudesheim, who was Sassaman's superior officer that rarely left the air conditioned confines of Saddam's Tikrit Palaces, and other commanders like Ricardo Sanchez in the Green Zone. No civilian DoD leadership dared venture trips to make suggestions on the ground, and for the first six months in that AO, all we did was continue a holding pattern while we waited for directives on what to do. All the while, the insurgency began to grow and civilians wondered how the powerful American military machine, which ran through their nation in just three weeks did not have a plan once the Baath Party fell. As more American soldiers died and no major assistance or form of help from the leadership at the very top. Colonel Sassaman and his officers had no choice but to fall back on the Warrior Ethos and its code of taking care of ones own soldiers. Very few high ranking officers of the post Vietnam Army were willing to risk their careers to do such a thing, especially without a clear plan for this war's post-Saddam Iraq objectives. However, Colonel Sassaman realized the most important thing was getting many of his men back home as could be possible, while trying to help the Iraqis that did not want to the cruelty of Saddam's regime. Ask the Iraqi civilians in predominately Shia city of Balad of their opinion of Colonel Sassaman, and you realize he would have been elected mayor for the way he protected them from the violent Sunni enclaves outside of their city. Until the civilian planners and "perfumed princes"(as the late great David Hackworth might say), the officers that never left Central Command in Qatar, or the Green Zone in Baghdad, or the palaces of Tikrit came up with a clear and attainable plan, Sassaman made the best choices that an impossible situation could provide. It is easy in hindsight to criticize him in War Colleges and Intellectual Ivy towers, without the complexity and ever changing dynamic of 21st century war on the ground. Going back to the "Warrior Ethos" was the right thing to do, not the wrong course of action.

Me parece un excelente libro en su plantamiento, pero desmerece mucho el hecho que las consecuencias del Mexico de hoy en temas de corrupción y clientelismo lo remita únicamente a la Colonia, a temas de Iglesia y los liberales sean los constructores del Mexico moderno cuando los propios liberales en estos 200 han perfilado y forjado las instituciones con sus virtudes y defectos y fortalezas que tienen. Me parece que esa tendencia de cubrir algo que los liberales de estos 200 años han hecho con Mexico es una cuestión crucial para entender la realidad y plantear cambios no desde el conservadurismo o el liberalismo sino en el plano únicamente humano de la seguridad humana y del bien comun, fuera de ideologizaciones y omisiones que únicamente siguen la misma linea de los 200 años no reconocer el origen completo de nuestra realidad y de nuestros problemas.

It could have been a lot better.

There are some things that are good about this book.

The explanations are pretty good.

But when someone is attempting to learn a system, one of the most frustrating things is to have a lot of errors in the examples.

If the author had just gone through trying to type in the examples to see if they worked they would have seen that at least 10% of the example commands are wrong and/or incomplete.

It wouldn't be so bad if I already knew Hadoop, the errors would be obvious because once I do google searches to figure out what the author meant to display, it is very obvious.

But I bought this book to learn the product which means, I'm left hanging every time there is an error.

I suggest you wait for the next version so maybe they will do some editing and get it right.

In the mean time, get a different book on Hadoop.

Helping the beginner getting started in Hadoop

'Hadoop Beginner's Guide' by Gary Turkington is a book that helps walk beginners through understanding Hadoop and how to go about using it.

The first two chapters are introductory and cover what Hadoop is and how to install it. The second chapter also walks you through writing a couple basic MapReduce jobs.

Chapters 3, 4 and 5 take you deeper into MapReduce. It starts out where with small simple code and then goes on to more advanced topics such as joining different data sets.

Chapters 6 and 7 are on the administrative side and help you understand what to do when things start breaking and how to keep things running smoothly.

Chapters 8, 9 and 10 take you on a journey of some of the tools in the Hadoop ecosystem. Hive (chapter 8) and Sqoop (chapter 9) are tools that you will find yourself working with if you're more of a relational person or you need to connect Hadoop to your RDBMS. Flume (chapter 10) is a way for moving log data from remote servers into HDFS (among other things).

The last chapter talks about various things such as the different vendor distributions out there, other tools in the ecosystem and where you can find more information to continue on your journey.

As others have stated, there are some errors in the book's code. These are easily overcome by looking at the errata or a quick Google search. Sure it would be great if the book was perfect, but then I don't think that I've read a book that didn't have errors in it. Besides, trying to fix the errors that are presented, can sometimes make you learn more than you would have if everything was just copied and pasted. ;)

I would also have liked to see a chapter devoted to Pig as I feel that's just as important of an abstraction over MapReduce as Hive is, but I can understand that the ecosystem is too big to cover everything.

If you're new to Hadoop and you're willing to read the book and work through the examples, you will learn a lot.

Good description of Hadoop and its ecosystem

I read this book "out of context", meaning that I didn't have an interesting problem solvable by MapReduce at hand and a dire need to learn Hadoop at the time of reading. Instead, I took time to read this book with the purpose of determining whether it's a good beginner book or not. All in all, I'd say that it is. The author really succeeds in creating a context for Hadoop and its ecosystem.

From the second chapter and onwards, Hadoop is gradually introduced using very detailed instructions. The general format for doing this is by listing every single command the user needs to type and its output, so the book is full of terminal session listings. All such listings are followed by sections called "What just happened?" that explain in detail the purpose of the commands and their output. This is actually quite helpful for readers who understand what's happening from just looking at the session listing; such readers can safely skip these sections.

The above approach should enable any reader, regardless of level of experience, to follow along and do the exercises or labs, which is a good thing for a beginner book. I have a remark about this though: the session dumps could have been proofread better! I can't say that I read them through a magnifying glass, but still I found quite a few errors.

As for the contents, the book never shows the monster! In my opinion, the introductory chapter fails to actually establish a case for Hadoop and MapReduce. Yes, it's about big data, scaling and problems and so on, but I couldn't find a logical transition to Hadoop as a solution to these problems. Instead, chapter two illustrates the framework with a distributed calculation of pi and the word counting program (Hadoop's version of the "Hello world" program).

In a later chapter, Hadoop is used to process a dataset with UFO sightings, and then, in a chapter on advanced techniques a graph problem is solved. Not until that chapter did I start getting a feeling for what kind of problems Hadoop and MapReduce should be used for. This is what I mean by "never showing the monster". Being an introductory text, I'd prefer the first or second chapter to describe some problems that are good candidates for the MapReduce paradigm, illustrate one of them, and then show how a distributed computation would help.

That said, I may be off track here. This is a book on Hadoop, and not MapReduce in general, and I did say that I read it without having intricate MapReduce problems at hand. This is pretty much my only criticism. If a reader doesn't perceive this as a problem, then there's nothing to complain about. After reading the book, I feel that I have a very good feeling for what Hadoop does and what building blocks in its ecosystem to use.

One more thing... Here and there the book contains examples of how to use Amazon's EMR. This didn't feel awfully important to me, but it provides an even more solid explanation of how to apply the framework to bigger problems and how it can be used in a cloud environment.

To sum up: a good and comprehensive book on Hadoop that covers the framework and its ecosystem, verbose and easy to follow examples, and a structure that leaves the reader with a sense of getting the big picture.

Minuses: could devote some more pages to the MapReduce paradigm and have its sample listings proofread better.

Teens #1 Favorite Cookbook!

The cookbook, Mac N' Cheese To The Rescue by Kristen Kuchar is bursting full of fun, ingenious & tasty Mac N' Cheese recipes for the family. My teen looked through the cookbook before I had the chance a few weeks ago. For the first time ever she said, "Can I have this cookbook?" so I said yes! Miss College girl will now have 101 recipes to try. She then went through the cookbook and picked out some new recipes for us to cook. I will be buying several copies of this cookbook to include as gifts for bridal showers and graduations!

This cookbook was created to "spice up everyone's favorite boxed comfort food" and sure to please any fan of mac n' cheese. All of the recipes use a box of mac n' cheese. If you make your own basic mac n' cheese then substitute the same amount as 1 box mix.

As with any of my cookbook reviews, I love sharing the chapters and a few of my favorite recipes.

Perfect For All Ages

Mac N Cheese has been the staple food in my diet as a child, lazy college kid, and now as a parent. I bought this book for some new ideas as Mac N Cheese can certainly get old. Little did I know there were some many different ways to have fun with this "go to" food choice. My daughter and I have so much fun just going through this book and "uwing and awing" at how great everything sounds to our taste buds. Have fun with this book and discover Mac N Cheese in a whole new way.

A very direct how to guide

Last week I was tasked with setting up Integration between Team Foundation Server 2012 and Project Server 2010. Being new to project server I started searching around for guidance online, I came across the book `Instant Team Foundation Server 2012 and Project Server 2010 Integration How-to' by Gary P. Gauvin. The book has 60 pages of guidance you can instantly apply to plan, set up, and configure Team Foundation Server Extensions for Project Server. Step-by-step instructions are also provided with enough detail to get you started without burdening you with a ton of background information. It doesn't just end there, the book also talks about best practices for managing the integration once its set up.

Though MSDN has useful guidance on project server integration, but the book summarises the License & CAL specifications, Authentication Modes, Permission Management and management SQL scripts all in one place apart from the installation and set up steps making it easy for you to get to when required. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for guidance on setting up and managing Team Foundation 2012 integration with Project Server 2010 without getting overloaded with too much information. few pages, but full of tips

Are just a few pages, not even 50, but full of help and information, an essential book and practical.
The exposition is clear and simple, a step by step guide, complete with precise directions, menu-checkbox-fields to select / click for the entire procedure.

There is also a section on the configuration of permissions and security for users, service account, and access to the database, which in fact is reported as "Must Know".

A small note: I would have expected a troubleshooting section, even not complete;
all the infos in this book help us in reducing error probabilities, but it might be helpfull any hint so reader could debug & find solution.

In summary, it keeps what promised in the title;
5 stars only with the section of the troubleshooting.

Very useful step by step guide

This book is a very thorough and concise guidance to setting up the integration between TFS and Project server. This integration has always been cumbersome and somewhat hard to get quite right, but this book makes this task that much easier.
The form of this book makes it very suitable for both anyone who are doing this the first time, making sure you don't miss any crucial step on your way. For those doing this again, it can also be used as a check list, to keep track of the different things you need to do.
I liked the form; it is very concise, with a minimum of extraneous chatter.

A seminal work in the field; will become the Gold standard!

This is a seminal work in the history of American genealogy that stands with Taylor & Crandall's Generations and Change—it will become the Gold standard for the field. Its content is as thoroughly documented as it is well written—suitable for both the academician and the family genealogist, it abounds with extremely valuable information for both and it is also a GREAT read!

Must-Have Book for Any Genealogist

This book answers a need for a History of Genealogy. Goes into fascinating detail on the Colonial period and later. Really should be on the short list for any serious student of genealogy.

A good first survey

Despite its current popularity, genealogy seems never before to have generated its own history; and this short book, well researched and decently written, proves a good introduction. Nevertheless, there are few surprises: colonial Americans employing genealogy to bolster social status; the late nineteenth century using it as a handmaiden of scientific racism; and the late twentieth turning it into a search for one's identity.

Most interesting to me are the outliers: Americans with crackpot notions of inheriting British estates, parvenus looking for coats-of-arms to put on silverware and cufflinks, Mormons investing serious dollops of time and money for religious reasons, and the internet’s apparent creation of interest simply because family trees could now be so easily investigated. (Like many of the more-or-less ornamental sides of life, it’s unwise to discount pure curiosity if it can be done on the cheap.)
