Encounters with Jesus

Timothy Keller is in the midst of releasing a 10-part series called "Encounters with Jesus". If all the books are as solid as the ones which I have read, they are well worth your time. As a pastor, one of my biggest impediments in leading others to know Christ is that they believe they know him already. They have grown up in the church, gone to Sunday School, heard all the Bible stories, and they think that is the equal as knowing him.

The books in this series question the assumptions we make about Christ. Each book in the series covers a conversation Jesus had with someone. These conversations were not about individual sins or particular theological beliefs and practices, nor were they a bunch of talking points or a political platform. Instead, in these encounters we see him meeting people at the point of their important, unspoken questions: Who are we, and why are we here? Why be a good person; why love rather than hate? What's wrong with the world--And what, if anything, can make it right?

The Gospels are crawling with encounters that made a deep impression on those who conversed with Jesus in this way. Keller examines these encounters and how they can still address our questions and uncertainties today.
So far, I have read three:

"The Grieving Sisters", which is the story of Mary and Martha mourning their brother's death. Here, we are faced with the questions, what does the world need, and who can make the world right? Keller examines the individual personality of Jesus and shows us that because he is both God and man, he is capable of providing everything we need.

"The Wedding Party" covers Jesus' very first public act in starting his ministry was to turn water into wine in the middle of a wedding celebration. Here, Keller unpacks the significance of the feast--a symbol of the end of judgment, the celebration to come, and the atonement needed to make it possible.

"The First Christian" delves into an encounter between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, one of his most beloved followers. In this book, Keller illuminates the Christian belief of faith and make sense of its function in solving the crucial mysteries of life.
Each book is wonderfully written and easy to understand, yet deep in truth and wisdom.

Jesus Knows How To Party Like No Other!

The Wedding Party is the fourth essay in the Encounters with Jesus Series - based on several lectures given to students by Tim Keller at Oxford Town Hall, London, in 2012. In the previous three essays Keller has tackled some of the most important questions one can ever ask. In this essay Keller tackles the question: "What did Jesus come to do?" He answers this question by giving us an exposition of Jesus' first recorded miracle, or sign at a wedding feast in Cana as recorded in chapter two of the Gospel of John.

The miracle of Jesus' turning water into wine was ultimately a symbol or a signifier of something greater to come. Keller masterfully gives three future signs that Jesus' miracle at the wedding banquet point to. There are three symbols or types in this wedding encounter that all ultimately point to our future with Christ. This story is a picture of how Jesus enjoyed the joy at the wedding feast by providing more wine, and yet how He became our substitute on the cross by receiving the cup of God's wrath that we deserve so that we can one day receive the coming joy provided by Him.

Keller unfolds the big story of all of the Scriptures in this one story from John 2. He shows our need to be reconciled to God, how Jesus provides what we need, and how Jesus is the provider of the feast that we all ultimately long for. We can face anything in life knowing what awaits us at the Lamb's party that is to come in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Love this series

I've enjoyed all of The Encounter with Jesus series, but this may have been my favorite because of the rich exposition of John 2. I've never heard this passage expounded in this way and connected to the gospel so directly.

Keller first points out Jesus makes himself the Master of the party. He brings joy and life to something on the edge of disaster. He then points out,
"`Yes,' he is saying, `I'm going to suffer. Yes, there's going to be self-denial. Yes, there's going to be sacrifice--for me first and then for my followers as well. But it's all a means to an end, which is festival joy! It's all in order to bring about resurrection and the new heavens and new earth. The end of all evil and death and tears. You know all those Dionysian legends about the forest running with wine, dancing, and music? That's nothing compared to the eternal feast that is coming at the end of history'" (68 of 646).

These connectedness with the overall mission of Jesus saturates the water into wine wedding feast sign. It's a rich picture that refracts the gospel story in dozen ways. I don't want to give to much more away. It's a short read, and I could give three or four more paragraph quotations with rich gospel pictures.

I give it two stars because it is kind of ...

I give it two stars because it is kind of interesting from a historical point of view. The book is rather poorly written with stilted dialog and contains some things that are factually wrong--for example, the wife automatically becoming Japanese upon marriage. it is filled with wild stereotypes that even back in the 1970s were offensive to women who were married to Japanese men. I have no idea why the blurb on the cover calls it "perceptive" because it is anything but that.

David A. Studebaker

David Studebaker is Chief Technical Officer and a founder of Liberty Grove Software with his partner Karen Studebaker. Liberty Grove Software, a Microsoft Partner, provides development, consulting, training, and upgrade services internationally for Microsoft Dynamics NAV resellers and end user customers.

David has been recognized by Microsoft as a Certified Professional for NAV in all three areas: Development, Applications, and Installation & Configuration. He has been honored by Microsoft as a Lead Certified Microsoft Trainer for NAV.

David just celebrated his first half century of programming, having started programming in 1962. He has been developing in C/AL since 1996. David has been an active participant in each step of computing technology from the first solid state mainframes to today's technology, from binary assembly language coding to today's C/AL and C#.

David's special achievements include his role as co-developer of the first production multi-programmed SPOOLing system in 1967. David has worked on a diverse set of software applications including manufacturing, distribution, retail, engineering, general accounting, association management, professional services billing, distribution/inventory management, freight carriage, data collection and production management, among others. Prior to co-authoring this book, David was the author of Programming Microsoft Dynamics NAV (for the Classic Client) and Programming Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 (for the Role Tailored Client).

David has had a wide range of development, consulting, sales and management roles throughout his career. He has been partner or owner and manager of several software development businesses, while always maintaining a hands-on role as a business applications developer.

David has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He has been writing for publication since he was an undergraduate. David has been a member of the Association for Computing Machinery since 1963 and was a founding officer of two local chapters of the ACM.

Christopher D. Studebaker

Christopher Studebaker, a NAV Developer/Implementer, has 12 years' experience designing, developing, implementing and selling the NAV and SQL Server environments. He has specialized in retail, manufacturing, job shop, and distribution implementations, most in high user-count, high data volume applications. Chris has worked on many NAV implementations with integrations to external databases and third party add-on products. Some special applications have included high volume order entry, pick-to-light systems, procurement analysis and Web frontends.

Chris acts in a consulting and training role for customers and for peer NAV professionals. He provides training both in informal and classroom situations, often developing custom course material to support courses tailored to specific student group needs. Courses have included various NAV functional and development areas.

Before becoming a certified NAV developer, Chris was a certified environmental consultant working with manufacturing facilities to meet national and state regulations. His duties included regulatory reporting, data analysis, project management and subcontractor oversight. Accomplishments included obtaining several safety certifications and managing projects for hazardous material management and abatement.

Chris is a Microsoft Certified IT Professional, SQL Database Developer, as well as a Microsoft Certified Business Solutions Professional in NAV Development and NAV Installation and Configuration. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Illinois University and has done graduate work at Denmark Technical University.

Very good to get started

The latest update to the book on NAV programming (David Studebaker wrote the book on two previous versions) will get anyone started who wants to learn about programming NAV 2013. What I like about it is that both authors actually care a great deal about showing you the ropes, and I think that shows in this book. This book covers all the concepts that you need to know to become a NAV programmer.
The wordiness sometimes gets in the way of getting to the point, so I would give it 4.5 stars. Other than that, this is THE book for anyone that wants to get into this field, and anyone that wants to have a reference for the new development features in NAV 2013.

If you want to learn how to customize Dynamics NAV 2013 then this is the book for you. The book explains in detail all of the objects (tables, pages, queries, reports, codeunits,...) and how to use the C/AL programming language using real life examples.
Even if you are a non technical consultant, manager this book will give you great insight in Dynamics NAV 2013.

A must for C/AL beginners and veterans

How does the book read? To be honest, it is quite boring (it is a technical book after all) ... if you make the same mistake as I am doing: reading it as I do when you have some time to spare.
So, how do you need to read it? You should be behind your computer with NAV2013 installed (preferably with a developer-license) and while reading it, you should dirty your hands following the books' hands-on project used to explain the various parts and also doing other experiments as they come to mind. If you are an experienced C/AL developer, you might also skip the books' hands-on project and definitely(!) do some experimenting when something comes to mind.

Like I said, reading it in the way I do is not the best way, but still there are some things for me to learn (even with over 10 years of C/AL experience) and also some things I bookmarked because I like experimenting with new things!

In short: A must for people who want to start programming in C/AL in NAV2013. But don't make the mistake to read the book as I do. You need to dirty your hands while reading it. And also don't think to finish it in a short time (even if you read it as I do)! And also a must for veteran C/AL programmers. You will definitely find something new to learn!

In vignettes so focused they often seem like actual memories, McNamer (Rima in the Weeds) creates a family saga that strikingly evokes time's passage. The reader's first impression of Amelia Malone, circa 1973, is that she's a pathetic and feeble old woman who spends hours putting on makeup. Her octogenarian brother Jerry is introduced with even less ado. Subsequent chapters detail these siblings' more vibrant years: in the 1910s, Amelia aspires to be a chanteuse in Manhattan, where failed contracts and talented competition leave her dispirited. Jerry survives droughts and winters as a homesteader in Montana, then has minor success as an oil prospector. As Amelia leaves New York to visit him, the novel draws nearer its climax—a 1923 prizefight between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons that is intended to bring prosperity to the small Montana town's economy. A flash-forward to the 50-year anniversary of the fight, and a celebration at which "old-timers" like Jerry and Amelia are patronizingly honored, offers a powerful commentary on how that hope was dashed. While there's certainly occasion for bitterness in Amelia and Jerry's decline, it is tempered by the seamless beauty and clarity of the narrative and the universality of the characters' struggles against encroaching infirmity.

lovely descriptions

This author writes beautiful descriptions -- over and over. There are many and while each one is fine, they just go on and on. So much that I found the plot, the drama, the tension weakened. Finally, there is no real conclusion to my way of reading. It is much like a long, very long, "slice of life" novel. "This is the way it was" is the theme. I grew tired of plowing ahead, was glad to be finished, but disappointed in the resolutions of the conflicts, such as they were. But if you like wonderful use of words, you will enjoy every page!

An uninteresting family saga

You can read my title in either of two ways and be right. This novel is an uninteresting saga about a family, and it's also a saga about an uninteresting family. Or you can go whole hog and see it completely as an uninteresting saga about an uninteresting family.

There's no denying that this book apparantly entertains some readers. I'm not one of them.

The truth is that I basically haven't been excited by any of Nancy's rediscoveries. I guess she just has radically different tastes in books than I do. So if you've enjoyed her other recommendations, there's a pretty good chance you'll go for this one. (and then again, maybe not)

Too many unproven assertions; more art than science

The Growth Experiment is a difficult book to evaluate. There are many claims/economic projections he makes that are neither obviously true or false. Don't take my word for it: Lindsey admits this is true. On page 62, he writes: "You may feel appear that estimating revenues from theold law has a never-never land quality and so it does." (He also says the same thing, page 59) in relationship to the "pecuniary" effect, which are changes in taxpayer behavior that do not affect the size of the economy). "The economic impact of other responses, such as shifting assets from taxable to tax-free benefits are even harder to assess." His evaluation of the elasticity of labor supply to taxes (I'm assuming readers of this book understand what this means), has been challenged in several economic papers by prominent economists.

Replace all taxes with a uniform VAT!

This book is in two parts. The first 90% covers the history of the tax cuts made by Congress at the behest of Presidents Kennedy, Reagan, and Bush. These are told from the perspective of a conservative, "supply side" economist. The remaining 10% is author Lawrence Lindsey's proposal to replace our current system with his version of The "KISS" (keep it simple, stupid) System.

I warmed to this book immediately upon reading Lindsey's opening sentence:

I feel the same way. I've spent decades programming computer systems to compute payroll taxes, VAT taxes in other countries, and customs duties on international trade, so I'm something of a tax geek. I don't mind FIGURING my taxes (maybe enjoying figuring taxes is a masochistic fetish like smelling old tennis shoes?) but I do mind PAYING them. The next sentence drew my interest even more:

But I really became hooked when I got to serve on the Council of Economic Advisers during the Reagan administration where I was Senior Staff Economist for Tax Policy.

I also started working in 1979, the year before Reagan was elected President. Taxes, with a top rate of 70% were a heavy burden. High taxes were cited by Reagan as the root cause of the "stagflation" that had sent unemployment to 10%, inflation to 12%, and mortgage interest rates to 18%. The inflation rate of 10% pushed people into higher tax brackets without boosting their real incomes. Businesses and their investors were paying taxes on phantom earnings derived by selling products in an inflating currency. And try buying a house or taking out a business loan at 18% interest!

Reagan drove a stake through the heart of our economic malaise by convincing Congress to:

1) Lower the top personal income tax rate from 70% to 28%
2) Index the tax brackets to inflation, ending bracket creep
3) End the "marriage penalty" that taxed combined incomes of spouses at a higher rate than each would earn as individuals.
4) Allow businesses to expense their purchases of capital equipment instead of depreciating them over a period of years.

Reagan's tax cuts were enacted and the economy recovered. We returned to full employment; wages rose; inflation and interest rates fell. Reagan's tax cuts worked so well in growing the economy that Presidents and Congresses continued cutting taxes for the next thirty years. By the mid 2000's we had:

1) Reduced the tax rates on dividends and capital gains from 28% to 15%.

2) Reduced the income tax for middle class families with children by giving an extra $1,000 tax credit for each child under 17 and by expanding tax-sheltered IRA's and college accounts.

3) Turned homes into tax shelters by allowing people to deduct the mortgage interest on their primary residences AND vacation homes and to deduct up to half a million dollars in home appreciation tax free.

Despite all those additional tax cuts, the economy collapsed in 2008 and remains mired in the Great Recession of slow economic growth and perennially high unemployment. We have now elected a President and Congress who believes in reversing some of the tax cuts.

My perspective is that I am no friend of taxes. I don't itemize my deductions and have no tax shelters. I pay tons of taxes to all levels of government. My former business partner used to say, "We have a THIRD partner I our business. Uncle Sam takes a third of our money off the top!"

On the other hand, I understand that our country has taken on important social commitments such as Social Security and Medicare. I take pride in our ability to defend ourselves with a strong military. I understand these things have to be paid for by taxes. The collapse of the economy in 2008 also changed my thinking. We cut taxes to the lowest levels since the 1920s and the economy froze. The tax cuts of that era were NOT used to build up the U.S. economy, but rather to relocate the productive parts of it overseas, while fueling a crazy speculative boom here at home. And I was annoyed by the spectacle of billionaires paying themselves with tax-sheltered income (dividends, capital gains, and carried interest) at 15%, while the rest of us get socked with tax rates going up to 40% on wages.

But I don't want to impose confiscatory taxes merely to "punish" the well-to-do. I just want tax rates to be consistent and fair with everybody and to be sufficient to pay for the commitments we've collectively asked our government to make on our behalf. I read this book to glean Lindsey's advice on reforming them to encourage future growth. His credentials are impressive:

Bush then appointed me to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve....I was put in charge of Housing and Community Affairs and one of my assignments involved rebuilding America's inner-city neighborhoods.

Lindsey excels in explaining why the tax cuts enacted by Presidents Kennedy and Reagan boosted economic growth. People under the age of 45 probably won't remember how awfully bad things were when Reagan took office, and they will not remember how effective Reagan's tax cuts were in restoring non-inflationary economic growth.

However, I do think the book is lacking a perspective on why tax cuts were not effective in growing the economy during President Bush's 2001-2008 administration:

1. In Kennedy's and Reagan's time we did not have an offshored economy. When the wealthy received a tax cut they spent some of it on American-made products and invested some of it in expanding American-based businesses. In the current days of globalization America's wealthy buy mostly foreign-made goods and invest their money in foreign-based businesses that export back to the USA. Their purchases and investments don't add value to the economy for the 99% who work for wages.

2. In the 1960s through 1980s the 1% felt an economic responsibility to keep the 99% employed. All Americans of that generation had suffered mightily during the Great Depression. The 1% believed that their prosperity depended on keeping the 99% employed. In those days Vulture Capitalists did not use borrowed money and junk bonds to gain control of a company for the purpose of putting its employees out of work and then looting the cash flow. Until the 1980s business was about creating wealth through long-term sustainable growth. These days business is more about destroying wealth. Buy a company, fire half its people, and then pocket their paychecks and pensions. Thus, tax cuts for the 1% today have a less happy impact on the economy of the 99% than did those of the Kennedy and Reagan eras.

Final Chapter: Pro-Growth Tax Policy for the Twenty-First Century

The main reason you'll want to read this book is to glean Mr. Lindsey's proposal for tax reform, which he calls "The Kiss (keep it simple, stupid) System." It's a VAT (value added) tax of 20% imposed at all levels of business (manufacturing, wholesale, and retail).

If a company's cost inputs are $1,000,000 and its revenues are $1,500,000, then its tax is ($1,500,000 - $1,000,000) * 20% = $100,000.

That is an easy tax to administer. It gets business focused on the RIGHT objectives of growing its revenues and profits, instead of soaking up 1/3rd of its accounting staff in tax avoidance schemes. It would encourage companies to commit their capital to innovating new goods and services instead of wasting their money buying up failed businesses just to acquire their tax credits on loss carry forwards.

Employees would be taxed the same way. If an employee is paid $70,000 the company would withhold 20% of his/her pay. Anybody who receives non-wage income would presumably be taxed 20% on the income, regardless of source. All deductions, exemptions, and loopholes would be removed from the code.

The "KISS" advantage of course is simplicity and fairness. All business and personal income (value-added income in the case of business) is taxed at 20%. No more taxing of different kinds of incomes at different rates or of allowing some people to avoid paying taxes by sheltering their income in dodgy loopholes.

Mr. Lindsey isn't at his best in explaining this uniform VAT concept. I had to read the chapter five times to grasp it, but once I did, I liked the idea. He makes the case conclusively for replacing the current corporate income tax of 35% on profits (which are easy to manipulate for tax avoidance) with a VAT tax of 20%.

Replacing the personal income tax rate with a flat 20% (no deductions or exemptions) is going to be more controversial, but Mr. Lindsey has convinced me to support it in principle. My only questions is whether 20% across the board is sufficient to do away will ALL other taxes. I'm sure 20% would be sufficient to eliminate the personal income tax, but I'm dubious about it being sufficient to eliminate Social Security and Medicare, which in any case are supposed to be insurance programs, not taxes.

Again, Mr. Lindsey's writing isn't at its most lucid in this most important final chapter, but if you read it slowly a couple of times his arguments become convincing. He succeeds in making his case for replacing our current mish-mash of taxes with a uniform VAT at the personal and corporate levels.

The author clearly understands we can't continue down the path we are on. The most profound statement was it may be to late to turn back if pols continues to function in ways that will get them reelected rather than protecting the free market.

The author does a great job shining a light on the real reasons the economy reacted to tax cuts and how most people ignore the need for reducing debt and government spending. Would like this book to be required reading for our liberal friends. They might learn how fairness can really be achieved through the reality of economics.

The book is well footnoted and should be considered very credible.

Wonderful Book

I've read it more than once. Each time I learn new things. Such as when Maui drew from the ocean bed using his magic hook Manaiakalani on page 105. Later I met a Kumu hula whose name Manaiakalani.. wow.. to learn of - Hi'iaka was accompanied by Wahine-oma'o--the woman in green--a woman as beautiful as herself.. when you also read Unwritten Literature of Hawaii, by Nathaniel B. Emerson.. great stories.. If you are familiar with Joseph Campbell and his Hero's Journey outline.. These books will be a joy and a pleasure.

Andrés Amorós

Andrés Amorós es catedrático de Literatura Española y escritor. Autor de más de ciento cincuenta libros, ha recibido, entre otros, los premios Nacional de Ensayo, Nacional de Crítica Literaria, Fastenrath de la Real Academia Española y Letras Valencianas.
