High Adventure for Early Readers

Did you ever notice how exciting adventure books are written for older and middle readers only? The second and third graders really seem to miss out. This book is a wonderful find. Written at a late 2nd grade or early 3rd grade reading level, it provides a wealth of excitement and adventure. My daughter loves Bulla. We have read all of Bulla's children's books and this is one of the best. We also recommend "Sword in the Tree" and "Ghost Town Treasure". For a more contemporary style novel, try "Shoeshine Girl"

A Good Adventure

This book is about three children whose father is in America helping to settle the colonies. Shortly after he leaves for America the children's mother dies leaving them with nothing and no one to look after them. The oldest child Amanda decided to take a boat to America and find their father. On the ship ride to America, there is a terrible storm and the ship is wrecked. The three children are forced to live in a hut on an island with other families from the ship until a new ship can be built.
This historical fiction is a great adventure for children in 3-5th grade. I enjoyed the vivid details that helped draw me into the story. I couldn't put the book down. It is a story of courage sure to get the imaginations of children going.
The author of this book conveyed a strong message of courage and a determination to live your dreams. This adventure had an inspiring tail of overcoming struggle and working together to survive.

Hard Times in the 1600's

A Lion to Guard Us by Clyde Robert Bulla tells the story of Amanda, Jemmy and Meg who live in England in the 1600's. Their father goes to Jamestown, and their mother becomes very ill, falls on the stairs, gets sicker and dies. They live with Mrs. Trippett, a rich, cold-hearted lady that Amanda works for. Mrs. Trippett won't give them the money bag that was around their mother's neck when she died. They want the money to go to Jamestown. Mrs. Trippett kicks them out, but Dr. Crider finds them and takes them to his home. Then they get on a ship to Jamestown. Dr. Crider falls overboard during the trip, and Amanda doesn't know what to do next. A horrible storm hits, and they crash on Bermuda. Read this book to find out if they ever get off the island and find their father. The book shows how people had some hard times going from England to Jamestown in the New World. This book made me feel like I was there in the story. I like how Amanda didn't give up. I think that when you read this book it will inspire you and interest you.

About the Author
Daniel Bromberg, Ph.D., ABPP, is the Director of Special Psychological Services, LLC. He is a licensed psychologist in New Jersey and New York State. He is board certified in Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Dr. Bromberg’s primary interest is in assessing and providing evidence-based treatment to individuals displaying sexual behavioral problems. He works with children displaying sexual behavioral problems, adolescent sex offenders, and adult offenders, some of whom are supervised by the Sex Offender Management Unit of the New Jersey State Parole Board. In addition, he provides a range of assessment and treatment services regarding child maltreatment.

Before launching Special Psychological Services, LLC, Dr. Bromberg’s employment experience included working as a psychologist in a juvenile secure care facility, working as a staff psychologist at a regional diagnostic and treatment center for child abuse and neglect, and working as a school psychologist with children and adolescents displaying severe behavioral problems.

William O’Donohue, Ph.D., is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Nevada Reno. He has published over 70 books and 200 journal articles. He has directed a free treatment program for twenty years for children who have been sexually abused and adults who have been sexually assaulted.

When his little sister asks him to draw a dragon, a gentle green feeling comes over him, which turns black when his siblings snatch the picture and tease: "Awww-it's cwayon time." The book could be paired with Dr. Seuss's My Many Colored Days (Knopf, 1996), which specifically discusses colors as they relate to moods, or Molly Bang's When Sophie Gets Angry, Really Really Angry (Scholastic, 1999), in which the palette reflects Sophie's changing emotions. The colors feel right on—orange does seem perfect for a game of basketball, and watery blue right for “sailing on waves / in the sky of my mind.” Throughout, there’s a running story line about an African American family. The narrator is hassled by his older brothers until he takes a stand. He is happy when his brothers, little sister, and parents are all together at dinnertime. Poetry with a beat!

I absolutely love this book! We follow Jamie and his moods during the span of a typical day. I love the approach of associating colors with emotions. But then add a sort of freestyle rhyme to his thoughts as he shares his current mood and I was enthralled and reading with a big grin. I can't wait to work with both my boys on a mood/color writing project. This is the sort of book that surpasses entertainment into inspiration. I want to go old school, ditch the computer, and break out the notebook paper and yellow number two's. What a great start to their summer vacation reading! If you want to explore moods and emotions with your little one, this is a fantastic book. I almost forgot to mention the illustrations...fun and matched the story perfectly!

I love using this book to introduce discussion about feelings with my students. It also provides a natural early introduction to metaphor. Though not all the feelings in the book are compared to foods, my students are always motivated to create their own feeling/food comparisons by thinking of their favorites or least favorites and a feeling that might relate. I use this book every year!

I bought this book for my son and we love it! The text is so vibrant, not to mention the illustrations. My only complaint is that it took me too long to find it. I am hoping Amazon will work harder to feature MORE black children's book authors MORE prominently and MORE often.

About the Author
Athel Cornish-Bowden is, since 2009, Directeur de Recherche Emerite at the CNRS in Marseilles. He studied at the University of Oxford, and after post-doctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, he spent the early part of his career at the University of Birmingham as Lecturer and later Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry. In 1987 he moved to France as Directeur de Recherche (1ere classe) in the CNRS in Marseilles. He has authored more than 200 scientific publications, including several books as author and as editor. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals.

Equations and figures are NOT legible

Please download the Kindle sample before you buy. This is widely recognized as an outstanding textbook, but, at least for my Kindle or my Kindle app, it has the same problems as every other book for which equations and/or diagrams are essential parts of the author's presentation. As far as I can tell, there is no way to expand the size of either the equations or the figures to make them legible. Until the e-publishers solve this problem, textbooks like this MUST be purchased as paper books.

I'd love to have this famous textbook on my Kindle, so if I am wrong about this, PLEASE tell me how to scale the equations and diagrams with the text.

Excellent book on enzyme kinetics

This is an excellent introduction to enzyme kinetics. The author's style is clear and lucid, explanations are repeated several times within the text, all the most relevant equations are included, and there are plenty of illustrations. Good questions are presented after each chapter; solution are also included. This edition also contains the short biographies of contributing scientists. Great work.

A very useful text for those working in enzyme kinetics

This is the most complete current reference for modern enzyme kinetics. While it is not totally comprehensive, it is a rich source of knowledge about enzyme kinetics that is written by a master of the subject. If one needs to learn about enzyme kinetics at a level beyond that presented in most modern biochemistry texts, this is the place to start.

I am very fond of Sesame Street characters and stories. This one didn't disappoint. My little one and I were entertained and amused by Oscar's dry humor. Great pick for this season.

Insight into the toddler's mind?

Reviewing this book is one of those cases where I must really put myself into the mind of the primary audience. In this instance, that would be my 16-month old daughter. While there is certainly nothing wrong with this book and story, I personally wouldn't place it any higher than many other books out there.

However, from the moment my child saw this book (at about 12 months old), it has been one of her absolute favorites. Time and again, it's the one she brings to us to read. I don't know if it's the pictures, the sounds, or the taste of the cover (yes, she's a toddler), but something is doing the trick.

So if you're buying this book for someone older than 4 or 5, I can't help you. However, if it's for a toddler, I would definitely recommend it!

This series keeps getting better

This underappreciated series is one that I've been following for years. Birds of Winter takes the Harry Brock into a new adventure involving a wealthy hedge fund manager and a wonderful new character named Caedmon Rivers. It's always a pleasure to visit Harry Brock and the rest of the characters that populate this series.

Fascinating

This book made me wonder, who is this author who writes so well and in such a unique style? A web search led me to a podcast on NPR's This American Life. I went down a bit of a rabbit hole trying to learn about the author. Scott's own story is as interesting as the events he chooses to write about. Now I listen to his podcast "Home of the Brave" as well.

Expertly edited for the cream of the crop

I didn't find even one story that wasn't well done and fascinating. A great cross section of unique styles covering many topics, but each with insights into human nature. Made me wish I had a reading companion so we could have taken turns reading them out loud to one another.
