In this small, select collection of poems, Sze, author of six previous books of poetry and professor of creative writing at the Institute of American Indian Arts in New Mexico, has made accessible to Western readers the works of 18 Chinese poets previously translated into English sparsely, if at all. Among the most valuable aspects of this sensitively crafted collection is the introduction, in which Sze describes, in fascinating detail, his translation process, from the word clusters he creates for each Chinese ideogram to the finished poem. The Silk Dragon (Sze's metaphor for poetry) begins with the timeless poems of T'ao Ch'ien ("Evening dew moistens my clothes;/ but so what if my clothes are wet / I choose not to avoid anything that comes") and moves on to such masters of poetry as Wang Wei, Li Po, and Shen Chou, to name just a few. Toward the end, the reader is introduced to the contemporary poetry of Yen Chen, whose distinctive "party" voice nonetheless reflects his heritage: "The traveling bells ring quick/ like beans jumping in the frying pan." A quick-paced near-future thriller, with an interesting hero

At the start, Vaz is research physicist in a near-future world. He has horrible people skills, but very creative. One of his supervisors calls him, without affection, an Idiot Savant. Vaz has been fortunate--his skills are valued at work, he has a wife who understands his Apsberger-like limitations but is still in love with him after almost twenty years of marriage, and two kids.

His equilibrium is disturbed when his boss retires, and a new manager is appointed for the R&D team. Vaz's strange work habits, his incomprehension of office politics, and the new boss's ego lead to Vaz's loss of the job. Hijinks ensue when Vaz continues to pursue his fascinating ideas at home, his family get increasingly concerned over what they think is an average lab technician's joblessness, and his employer's desperate realization of what they lost.

Vaz is a likable character; his scientific brilliance, and his remarkable physical strength paired with inability to read emotions, and childlike dislike of change. The science-fictional ideas are interesting, but are mostly a vehicle to expose character development. Still, Dahners has built a plausible world, with social aspects of technology development showing consistency and thought. The book is short, with a rather streamlined plot: I found it pleasantly entertaining.

Funny, interesting

This book somehow makes the reader root for a socially incompetent nerd. Not just incompetent because of lack of experience, but because he doesn't seem to have enough of some abilities that we all take for granted: being able to easily infer other people's feelings from their displayed behavior or speech, and to react appropriately. Some of the funniest parts are where he's trying to figure out what someone's thoughts or feelings are, even when it is totally obvious to the reader. It shouldn't be hilarious, but it is. This is combined with a love story, some decent science, some nasty bad guys, and some action. All in all, a great read. Be warned: you're likely to come away with a bit more sympathy for the socially incompetent amongst us. Good stuff.

Great Story: Hard science - Really disfunctional protagonist - Real personal family interactions.

This is not a book I would have just picked up. A good friend recommended it to me.

It is about a true genius that has negative interpersonal skills that is forced out of his comfort zone at a company and just gets on with his life. His genius is in visualizing and inventing strange things.

In some respects, this is a relatively simple story. You can kind of anticipate how it is going to progress.

The really strange part is that for such a simple story, I Could Not Put It Down!

This story is contemporary and reflects, in an extreme way, challenges in the work place, at home with your spouse, and dealing with teen age kids that are also really smart.

This book will also make you feel good when you get to the end.

Tara Fox Hall is an OSHA-certified safety and health inspector at a metal fabrication shop in upstate New York. She received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a double minor in chemistry and biology from Binghamton University. Her writing credits include nonfiction short stories, flash, short and novella-length horror stories, and contemporary and historical paranormal romance. Her horror stories have appeared in Deadman’s Tome, Flashes in the Dark, Ghastly Door, The Halloween Alliance, Black Petals, SNM Horror Magazine, Dark Eclipse, Cemetery Moon, and various anthologies. She also coauthored the essay “The Allure of the Serial Killer,” published in Serial Killers - Philosophy for Everyone: Being and Killing (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010). Her first E-Book, Surrender to Me, was published in September 2011. She divides her free time unequally between writing novels and short stories, chainsawing firewood, caring for stray animals, sewing cat and dog beds for donation to animal shelters, and target practice.

CREEPTASTIC!

WOW THIS BOOK WAS SO DAM CREEPY! I have never ever read a horror like this one. There is so much going on before you that at times I was like okay did I just read that or am I bugging out? Then I would go back and re-read it just to make sure I was not making things up. But Dam oh dam I have to read the first book because this is book two and it is Lash's story and how he became the cold hearted killer he is.

Lash comes from poverty. He knows he wants to make money and leave all that behind but to make money he has to do some not so nice things. he becomes bodyguard to the most powerful vampire in the world Abraham. It's working for Abraham where Lash learns that it is better to do what is told then go against it. He becomes this person that is cruel and mean. He hurts people sometimes for the job but sometimes for pleasure. He gets this high off of it but he soon finds himself in trouble and wanting to leave all that behind. But how do you put a past behind you when it defined you and your whole world?

Soon Lash will have to trust someone he is not sure can be trusted. As he goes to this person he is aware that he is going to need more protection so he seeks out the one person that can give him that. But what will he find in the end? Will it protection or will it be something else? This book was creepy as all get up but I love a good horror and if you are looking for that then come along for the greatest horror ride of a lifetime!

A Riveting and Disturbing Read

It is the depression and most people are suffering hard times, but Lash, once dirt-poor boy from the swamp, is doing well. He has become bodyguard and friend to Abraham, powerful vampire ruler. But his horrific past catches up with him and he still has nightmares every night.

Shadow Man, the second in the Lash series, is a very dark book. It is the study of the evolution of a killer. As the story progresses, Lash becomes more and more cruel and merciless, no longer obeying even his private, admittedly very flexible, moral code. It seems there is nothing he is not prepared to do in order to survive, and he does some dreadful things just for his own pleasure.

Tara Fox Hall's superb writing draws you in, so that even when you are repelled by some of Lash's acts, you cannot help feeling some sympathy for him. And you find yourself gripped by a horrid fascination.
A very disturbing book written by a mistress of horror. Well done, Tara. You creeped me out again!

Once again, Tara Fox Hall has riveted me with the story of Lash, the were-snake enforcer / assassin and his journey to manhood in the employ of those running the supernatural underworld. I sincerely found this book to be addicting. Lash is a remarkable character, and I couldn't believe when it ended... It's so much about learning to be a man, but more, it's also about learning to be a human being in the face of adversity, when everything is pushing him to be the worst he could be -- it's that kind of journey that I love to read about. The pacing is perfect, weaving the intricacies of loyalty and betrayal, affection and friendship, hate and revenge... It's darkly humorous as much as it is tragic. I cannot wait until Book 3 in the series. Tara, type faster!

A dark and strange book of a boy in the USSR during the last part of World War II

Russian literature in my opinion has always been a bit dark and harrowing. This book is no exception written by Andrei Gelasimov it is about a boy in the eastern part of the USSR during the last part of World War II and the rough life he leads. The boy is an illegitimate son of a man, he is being raised by his grandparents in a small village and he befriends a Japanese Soldier who is a POW. It is a bleak story, where the boy has to have a vivid imagination to survive and he also raises a wolf cub. Not much going on after that. It is a typical bleak look of life that is a cornerstone theme throughout Russian literature. If you are into Russian literature, then you will enjoy this book.

A Subtle but Powerful Work

Andrei Gelasimov's "Gods of the Steppe" is a thinly-plotted tale of life on the Sino-Soviet border during the last months of World War Two. It's a slice-of-life story that brings to the non-Russian reader a glimpse into what life was like on the edge of the Soviet empire while the Red Army shifted its forces from Europe to Asia in order to defeat the Japanese.

This world is seen through the eyes of Petka, an impoverished 12-year old boy from the little town of Razgulyaevka. He is poor only in worldly goods; his spirit, optimism and zest for life are an immeasurable wealth that others around him do not share. Petka dreams of being a soldier and lives in a near-perpetual fantasy land of constantly battling Hitler's minions or the hated Kwantung Army of the Japanese.

Petka's heart is too big for the town he lives in, and that is the main idea behind the story. He loves his friends and his mama, and he deals with those who wrong him fairly and effectively. Throughout the ups and downs of village life during wartime Petka's optimism remains unshakeable, and it carries him and the ones he loves "all the way to the horizon." This is another of Gelasimov's subtle but powerful works: only when you take the bird's eye view do you see the whole picture.

Interesting novel with great potential

Military novels are a dime a dozen. Culling out the unique perspective is what's difficult. In that endeavor, I believe Andrei Gelasimov has succeeded. War delivered through the eyes of a child - more aggressive but similar in ways to J. G. Ballard's Empire of the Sun - Gods of Steppe tells the story of a Russian boy named Petka living during WWII, who wishes he could aid his countrymen in the Red Army by fighting along the Russian-Chinese border. Given that unreality, instead he gets into all sorts of mischief and eventually comes to the realization everything is not what he once believed.

What I enjoyed about the novel was the realistic portrayal and description of war, as well as Petka's transformation. His transformation is two-fold. First, he's "the bastard" to everyone. His mother had him at an early age, and his family life is disheveled in ways that include war, despair, and substance abuse. But his interactions with the troops and camp guards is reinvigorating. Similarly, after initially being naïve and capricious, some harsh experiences altered his war-time perceptions. Enemies and allies sometimes swap. Family isn't always trustworthy. Safety and danger are often illusions. His interactions with the Japanese POW reminded me initial stages of the tragic friendship formed in Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

The negative of this novel is the delivery. At times it feels disjointed. It's not terribly difficult to follow, particularly for someone engrossed in the tale, but I could see it causing issues for some readers.

A valuable adjunct to American Legal History studies

I have become quite fond of the Wiley-Blackwell "companion" to American history series. Specifically, I found the volumes on Jefferson and American Colonial History to be quite well done. They are skillfully edited; published in attractive and durable hardcovers (a few in paper); and have contributions from a wide variety of experts in the particular topic. The only down side is that they are quite expensive and relatively few come out in later paperback formats.

This volume on American legal history continues this fine series. The editors have chosen to organize it in an unusual manner which works quite well. After an introduction, Part I is structured chronologically, covering the period from the 17th century up through 1970. Some essays deal with legal thought; others with the development of legal historical writing; and a particularly interesting one by Sally Hadden addresses what has been done, and what still needs to be done, in the field. I found this section helpful because it really orients the reader to the more specialized studies that follow.

Part II deals with "Individuals and Groups." These essays discuss Native Americans, women, African Americans, immigrants and families. There is even an essay on "The Legal Profession" by Mark E. Steiner. By Part III, we are dealing with a variety of "subject areas." This is probably the most substantive set of essays (running nearly 200 pages) dealing with topics such as law and labor, law and the economy, criminal law and justice, intellectual property, poverty and law and religion. A vital topic too often overlooked is discussed by Joanna L. Grisinger in "Law and the Administrative State."

Finally, Part IV moves away from substantive areas and deals with legal thought. Given my interests, I found this section to sparkle with essays on American jurisprudence, especially John Henry Schlegel on "Critical Legal Studies." At 100 pages, this is the smallest section, but well worthy of attention as a complement to the previous essays.

The table of contributors evidences once again the quality of this series. I found just reading the mini-bios stimulating given the authors' previous contributions to this field. A fine index is also included. All around, quite a valuable volume and one bound to entrance any student of American legal history.
