YA?Traditional fairy tales describe the princess (or heroine) as beautiful, obedient, generous, and kind; of all these, beauty is the most prized attribute. Walker's women are gutsy, resourceful, realistic, and firmly in tune with nature; their beauty comes from within. In "Ugly and the Beast" (one of the turnabout stories), Ugly is loved by her family and by the Beast for her sweetness; her far-from-perfect looks are irrelevant. "Princess Questa" confronts her fears of making changes, and, with growing confidence, takes control of her life. Environmental messages are woven into such stories as "White Riding Hood" and "The White God." Antiviolence themes appear in "Barbidol"; in "Snow Night," the good stepmother effectively thwarts the attempted rape and murder of her stepdaughter. The excellent explanations that precede each story provide scholarly references to Babylonian, Sumerian, Biblical, Greek, Roman, Celtic, and German myths and creation stories. The author's writing style is witty, whimsical, creative, clever, mostly smooth, and only occasionally heavy-handed in message. Her 28 stories belong in all YA collections. The book can be used for booktalking and as a source for creative writing or short-story assignments. It is not, however, for those who believe in the very traditional views of women. Walker, author of numerous feminist works, offers here a collection of 28 fairy tales in which women are the adventurous protagonists, confronting the whims and frailties of humanity and of the supernatural. Most of the tales are retellings of well-known classic fairy tales from a feminist perspective, reflected in titles such as "Gorga and the Dragon," "Ugly and the Beast," "Cinder-Helle," and "The Empress's New Clothes," while others are based on Greek myths or are Walker's own tales. Walker's rendition of the classic works maintain their style, language, and tone while integrating feminist themes, a balance she also achieves with her own tales, though "Barbidol," which plays on the contemporary cultural messages of the Barbie, Ken, and GI Joe dolls, seems out of place. The black-and-white drawings accompanying each tale are in keeping with the traditional style and feminist focus. READ FEARLESS GIRLS, WISE WOMEN AND BELOVED SISTERS INSTEAD

This book was terrible. The women in it are not anymore powerful than in traditional fairy tales (and they are involved with both attempted rape and domestic violence because they pick the wrong guys--they are sooo powerful because they kick men in the crotch to escape!). Plus, it seems that it is ok to say that men who are ugly are not as good as men who are attractive--basically she is advocating being a sexist as long as it is not against women. She also seems to have missed the fact that lots of "negative" aspects of traditional fairy tales (esp wolves) serve an allegorical purpose and taking them all so literally only makes her new stories very dull and wooden as she tries so hard to correct thses "mistakes". Please, please read Fearless Girls, Wise Women, and Beloved Sisters by Kathleen Ragan instead--far and above the best book with strong female heroines in a fairy tale/folktale setting!!

mixed messages

Although Walker says that she was tired of hearing about "beautiful princesses" waiting to be rescued by princes, I noticed that almost all of the illustrations of her heroines depicted lovely young women, albeit wielding swords or looking competent in some way. Also, I was hoping to give this book to a younger cousin, but after reading it, I decided against it. In several of the stories the women are sexually harrassed and/or assualted. Although women do face these threats, I think I'd approach the subject a little differently with children. Still, I will say that I enjoyed most of her stories. The "Goddess" and "wiccan/natural theology" themes were incorporated in many stories. Some of these retellings were clever, others predictable. Bottom-line: good for earth-mother, liberal, or literature-focused feminists and fairy-tale fans looking for more modern adaptations, bad for younger audiences, or conservative, traditional fairy-tale fans.

This book is not the basic fairy tale written from an exclusivly "girl power" viewpoint. Yes, it has the heroines rescuing the prince, or rescuing themselves when they get bored waiting for the prince, but it is also about female spirtuality, goddess religion, and filled with folklore and legends that have long since been lost to the general public.

Great kindle cookbook!

I wanted to let you know you can easily find recipes inside this kindle edition cookbook. Under Contents, just click on what section you want to view, then it takes you to that section where the recipes are listed, click on the recipe you wish to view and wah-lah! It is easy to navigate. I only wish there were more pictures.

MAINLY new never before seen recipes with a couple of amazing ones from her blog

I am a BIG fan of the picky-palate site and I cook primarily with her recipes since they always turn out fantastic and end up being staple meals that my family requests over and over.

When I cook with Jenny's recipes I never feel like I am wasting my time or money. Shopping for ingredients is easy (hit up Trader Joes and Costco for almost everything you need). She provides a "Pantry Must-Have" list in the beginning which makes whipping up her recipes mid-week even easier.

What most impressed me about the book is that it did not end up being a bunch of recipes that I have already seen over the years on her site (unlike some other bloggers). There are a tiny handful of items in the book from her site, but they are the seriously delicious ones.

I pre-ordered the book and spent the past weekend cooking up a storm around here: Oven baked BBQ Chicken (on the cover), Weeknight Mashed Potatoes, Apple pie and Buttermilk Pancakes. The "Momma's Homemade Mozz.-Stuffed Meatballs - these freeze well- (pg99)" and "Green Chili Chicken and Lime soup (pg145) are to die for.

Excited to tell everyone I know about this recipe book and I wish Jenny Flake all the best!

Tasty Food for Whole Family

Picky Palate is a fantastic blog I have been following, and I am equally thrilled with Jenny Flake's new bound cookbook that arrived at my home this past week. What a great one it is! We are parenting a young family of picky eaters, and the Picky Palate cookbook has so many great ideas to satisfy both parents (adventurous eaters!) and kids (selective and strong-willed!) alike. The well-photographed recipes call for common, easy-to-stock ingredients--a balanced mix of healthy and wholesome and tasty--to make the meals special yet easy, & worthy of gathering for family dinners. It was my birthday present to myself, and our family is glad to have it!

So bieten beispielsweise Meditationen, Trancezustände oder Träume die Möglichkeit den Bewusstseinszustand zu beeinflussen. Eine der gefährlichsten Möglichkeiten stellt dabei wohl der Konsum von Drogen dar. „Die Neigung, sich durch substanzartige Mittel in einen Rausch zu versetzen, um Probleme und Krisensituationen zu verdrängen oder das Lebensgefühl zu steigern, scheint einem tiefen menschlichen Bedürfnis zu entsprechen." Die Auswirkungen auf das Bewusstsein sind je nach Substanz recht unterschiedlich. Nikotin und Koffein wirken beispielsweise sehr gering, Kokain und Heroin hingegen in erheblichem Maße. Die Unterscheidung zwischen legalen und illegalen Drogen, die aufgrund der unterschiedlichen sozialen Einbettung und Verbreitung getroffen wurde, erweckt dabei den Eindruck, als seien die legalen Stoffe, wie Alkohol und Medikamente, weniger gefährlich. Dabei rangieren Alkohol und Medikamente auf den ersten beiden Plätzen der Suchtkrankheiten in der Bundesrepublik. Problematisch ist dabei vor allem, dass beide Stoffe für jeden frei zugänglich und der Konsum somit nur schwer kontrollierbar ist. Die besondere Gefahr bei Medikamenten besteht in der bewussten Einnahme, um Krankheiten zu heilen oder zu lindern. Werden bestimmte Pillen dann zu lange oder in zu großen Mengen eingenommen, machen sie krank. Oft verläuft

Doch die Bundestagswahl 2009 und besonders die Zeit danach haben die weiterführenden Auswirkungen dieses Prozesses sichtbar gemacht. Denn das entgegengebrachte Vertrauen der Wähler in die FDP, das bei der Bundestagswahl 2009 mit 14,6 Prozent der Zweitstimmen ungewöhnlich hoch war, und damit das schon bekannte Phänomen der Wanderung des Vertrauens von den Volksparteien zu den „Kleinen" deutlich wie nie zuvor zu bestätigen vermochte, hat sich in der kurzen Zeit danach bis zur Landtagswahl in Nordrhein-Westfalen im Mai 2010 und darüber hinaus extrem verflüchtigt. Allein von einer Krise der Volksparteien zu sprechen reicht deshalb wohl endgültig nicht mehr aus.
Die Wirkung einer Krise der politischen Repräsentation auf das gesamte Parteienspektrum scheint nun empirisch nachweisbar zu sein. Denn nicht nur die etablierten Parteien sind betroffen. Mit dem Aufkommen einer neuen politischen Bewegung - der Piratenpartei - kommt auch bei der Mobilisierung einer vermeintlich schwierig zu repräsentierenden Wählergruppe, nämlich den Erstwählern und sehr jungen Wahlberechtigten, ein neuer Aspekt ans Licht. You could cook from this book every day for 3 months and never get bored

Favorite recipe so far:
Chard Panzanella - *awesome* includes a wee bit of agave nectar which really balances out the acidity of the dish nicely.

I do a lot of organic gardening and am always looking for new ways to incorporate more greens into my cooking and this book delivers! And don't be fooled by the title, it's by no means just a bunch of salad recipes.

I'm not a vegetarian but have been eating less and less meat over the last few years and this book has a great mix of vegetarian and meat dishes that all include some super healthy greens.

The other stand-out feature of this book is that it has an awesome mix of flavors and styles from different cuisines. I'm pretty sure you could cook from this book every day for 3 months and never get bored. It also does a good job of balancing the healthiness aspect with ingredients that deliver on flavor and recognizing that every so often it's OK to slap a little bacon on something :)

Now that I've had a chance to cook with it some I'm definitely planning on gifting a copy to a couple of my like-minded family members.

No experience, no problem

This is a very easy to follow cookbook which opens the door to cooking I've never dealt with, leafy greens...
I've never been worried to try to smoke a 30 pound pork shoulder for 12 hours or cook a big pan of paella, but something about greens have always been intimidating. There seems to be mere moments during which you could go from raw vegetation and soggy sadness.

The recipes in here help to lift the veil of trepidation as you realize that the techniques aren't challenging. Kathryn curates a list of recipes that sneak in greens to enhance everyday foods. Kale shines as a snack, salted and roasted in the oven; as a side, sautéed with lemon and garlic; as an enhancement to breakfast burritos...

Once that's set, more complex, savory and spicy dishes await like Saag Paneer and African Stew... And then there's the shakes.
Turns out greens are more durable then you think... And who on earth doesn't like good food that cooks fast! Great book, highly recommended.

This is a great resource for Chefs (like myself) and those who simply need some guidance creating their own delicious meals that incorporate those nutrient-packed greens many are missing from their diets.

I have clients who struggle finding ways to incorporate greens in a creative way that doesn't resort to the stale side-salad and dressing tradition. This book does a great job providing user-friendly recipes that represent various cultures (Kimchi, African Peanut Stew) while also experimenting with cooking techniques and providing suggestions as to when these dishes are best served (Breakfast, Side-Dish, Winter, Summer, etc.)

The first recipes you should try upon receiving your copy: Arugula Hummus and Watercress/Potato Soup. MMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMM DELICIOUS!!!

Great book for entrepeneurs building an e-commerce website

PrestaShop 1.5 Beginner's Guide is a great book for entrepreneurs who want to build an e-commerce website so they can work from home and earn a passive income.

The book explains how to download PrestaShop, upload it to a server, create a database and run the installer. It also covers the most useful features in the Back Office.

It then provides advice on SEO including entering metadata, creating a tag cloud, configuring friendly URLs and submitting a sitemap and robots.txt file to Google.

After explaining PrestaShop's preferences, it describes how to send newsletters to customers, use Google AdSense to earn extra income and use Google Analytics to track stats.

The book explains how to create different user accounts with limited access to prevent accidental or malicious damage to the website, how to back up and restore PrestaShop's database and files and how to upgrade PrestaShop.

It then describes how to create PayPal and Google Checkout accounts, how to configure these accounts to work with PrestaShop and how to configure shipping as a fixed rate, by price, by weight and by carrier. The book also describes how to attract more customers with loyalty program, product comments and vouchers.

Finally, the book provides great advice on how to promote the website using Twitter and Facebook and by using techniques such as writing articles. There is also advice on how to analyse statistics to grow the website and generate a passive income.

Prestashop is an impressive way to let small website owners build out e-commerce abilities without too much sweat.

One chapter covers search engine optimisation, which is already a vast field. The chapter however eschews what it considers to be a narrow technical focus that other discussions of SEO often veer into. Instead it emphasises a top down approach of deeply understanding your business and what you are selling. Know your items and your customers so that you can best write compelling ad copy as well as articles that will induce them to clickthrough onto a sales page.

You can see that Prestashop readily lets you add meta tags to your pages. Of course, if you are the least bit technical, you know that what Prestashop has done is put a simple GUI in place of you having to manually edit each HTML file to write the tags. Still, the GUI is immediately obvious; no unnecessary frills. Likewise, Prestashop gives a trivial way to define a tag cloud. This is recommended because search engines find it useful as a concise summation of key phrases about a website. So do consumers and that is the point for you.

But the best advice I saw about SEO in the chapter is - "Don't use long words where short ones will do" and "immediate clarity". While they do not make the explicit comparison, this is the traditional advice for writing newspaper articles. Where the headline and first paragraph summarise the entire article.

Another nifty feature of Prestashop is how they have integrated the use of Google's free translations so you can easily translate some of your content into those languages supported by Google.

Also nice to see that the book discourages spamming. There is a natural tendency for many websites to want to get their emails out to as a large an audience as possible. You are cautioned about buying email lists. Only from a reputable source. Also, practise explicit opt-in. So do not add someone to your list unless they explicitly ask.

About the Author
Karen Sternheimer is a sociologist at the University of Southern California where she is also a faculty fellow at the USC Center for Excellence in Teaching. Her research has focused on issues related to popular culture and youth, particularly moral panics relating to both. She editor and lead writer for the Everyday Sociology blog and has appeared as a commentator on numerous networks, such as CNN, The History Channel, MSNBC, and Fox News.

Book condition fine, just didn't like it.

The purchase of the book was fine and everything was there but I particularly just didn't like the book. It was required for college reading but the author's point keeps getting repeated over and over with the same reasoning that doesn't convince me as a reader.

A book every parent and 18+ should definitely read. It's explicit, super easy and fast to digest. An eye-opener for some, for others it makes sense. The point is to get informed as much as possible to understand our society and its whys.

I had initially bought the 2010 edition of this book for class but was made to buy the latest edition. While there are some biases that I do not agree with, I like the way the book is written. It flows well.
