Forests for the People: The Story of America's Eastern National Forests, by Christopher Johnson, David Govatski

Forests for the People tells one of the most extraordinary stories of environmental protection in our nation’s history: how  a diverse coalition of citizens, organizations, and business and political leaders worked to create a system of national forests in the Eastern United States. It offers an insightful and wide-ranging look at the actions leading to the passage of the Weeks Act in 1911—landmark legislation that established a system of well-managed forests in the East, the South, and the Great Lakes region—along with case studies that consider some of the key challenges facing eastern forests today.

The book begins by looking at destructive practices widely used by the timber industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s, including extensive clearcutting followed by forest fire that devastated entire landscapes. The authors explain how this led to the birth of a new conservation movement that began simultaneously in the Southern Appalachians and New England, and describe the subsequent protection of forests in New England (New Hampshire and the White Mountains); the Great Lakes region (Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota), and the Southern Appalachians.

Following this historical background, the authors offer eight case studies that examine critical issues facing the eastern national forests today, including timber harvesting, the use of fire, wilderness protection, endangered wildlife, oil shale drilling, invasive species, and development surrounding national park borders.

Forests for the People is the only book to fully describe the history of the Weeks Act and the creation of the eastern national forests and to use case studies to illustrate current management issues facing these treasured landscapes. It is an important new work for anyone interested in the past or future of forests and forestry in the United States.

Review
"The book is well organized and well written in a clear, jargon-free style....With its clear, straightforward style, Forests for the People is a valuable information source for researchers, students, and concerned members of the public."
(Native Plants Journal)

"In short, this book provides an academically rigorous yet thoroughly absorbing account of the national forests of the eastern USA, from formation impetuses through to the breadth of present-day management challenges and solutions."
(Beneath the Treeline)

"gripping detail... fascinating historic context...Our forests need many heroes. Johnson and Govatski provide the background, issues and motivation for the people to join a historical procession of champions—champions who have always been essential to protecting forests." (Wisconsin Sierra Club's Green Review)

"The book's overall structure, split between historical narrative and case studies, makes it ideal for classroom use ... In documenting the path taken to create and manage the national forests of the eastern United States—a very different path from that of their western counterparts—the book illuminates crucial issues facing America's national forests, East and West" (Forest History Today)

"A nice blend of the history of our national forests and the current issues challenging them."
(Wildlife Activist)

"In sum, this book is a valuable resource for those who seek to better understand the evolution of forest policy, for environmentalists interested in developing effective strategies for collaborating with forest managers, and for historians seeking a concise overview of the development of the eastern forests. It is also likely to send readers into their gear closets, inspired to pursue new adventures in formerly unfamiliar parts of the eastern national forests."
(Environmental History)

"The book is well organized and well written in a clear, jargon-free style."
(Native Plants Journal)

"The first part of the volume provides the most detailed coverage of the establishment of eastern national forests that this reviewer has ever seen......a resource for students of both US forest history and forest policy."
(CHOICE)

"Overall, the book nicely traces the challenges faced and perseverance required to move the political will of a country towards a major environmental legacy. [Forests for the People] provides hope that, with perseverance and knowledge gained by scientists across the globe, we will move down the path of sustainability so desperately needed."
(Landscape Ecology)

"The Weeks Act of 1911 is one of the twentieth century's most significant environmental laws. Few recall its powerful impact on once-cutover eastern forests, though their flourishing condition today is compelling evidence of its significance. Forests for the People probes this remarkable recovery and offers an engaging account of the Weeks Act's complex legacy; it rightly warns that we are not yet out of the woods."
(Char Miller W. M. Keck Professor of Environmental Analysis, Pomona College)

"Forests for the People both deepened and broadened my understanding of and appreciation for the eastern national forests and the struggle to create and manage them. By providing the first comprehensive history of the Weeks Act and then, through case studies, carefully examining the challenges of implementing the law over the last century, the authors have helped frame the discussion for managing all our national forests in its second century." (James G. Lewis Forest History Society)

"As in the national forests, there is something for anyone to learn about in Forests for the People."
(Ecology)

Forests for the people
By Stephanie
A well organized and all inclusive guide that leads you through the history of forestry in the Eastern U.S. forests as well as modern case studies in several forests.

The first part of the book is a detailed history of the foundations of forestry in the Eastern U.S. ranging from complete destruction of the forests and habitats to the establishment of the national forests. Important figures, organizations and guidelines are all introduced making this a great textbook to pull from.

The case studies pull you into present issues facing the forests. The study in Allegheny National Forest is extremely pertinent to me.

A great text for anyone teaching forestry, or interested in the history of these forests.

This book was received as an Advanced Reading Copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

National Forests
By Angie Lisle
This book is exactly what it says it is: a history of the National Forests of the Eastern portion of the United States. A number of subjects are utilized to portray the Eastern National Forests and the problems they have faced and continue to face, as much of the information in this book is still relevant today.

The writing is a bit dry at times, with a text-book like quality, though where the book is dry will depend on what subject the reader likes least - for me, it was the politics with the gas/coal/logging companies. On the other hand, the details about the various flora and fauna of the various parks piqued my interest.

I requested a free copy of this book in exchange for a review because I heart trees and I like reading books that have 'West Virginia' printed in them. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that hunters played a role in ending the clear-cutting of Monongahela National Forest. I enjoyed how this book portrayed my state and our involvement with the evolution in the management of the National Forests.

uncritical; theoretically bereft; boring; pretty pointless
By J. Hintz
This book is not very good. It reads like the typical internal history of an agency (even though I do not think that's what it is), where, sure, there are bumps and bruises along the way, but the lessons are learned and everything improves with time. In a nutshell, this is theoretically bereft, uncritical historical scholarship. I am not sure what, if any, audience this book will really appeal to. There is no way for students or lay readers to come away from reading this book with a broader understanding of the critical issues faced in federal lands, eastern national forests or otherwise. Sure, the reader will learn about the Weeks Act and how the federal government used the interstate commerce clause to purchase lands in the east. And a couple of the substantive chapters on current issues are a bit interesting. The chapter on Florida's forests gives a nice overview of the history of controlled burning on national forests. The chapter on the Boundary Waters is ok. But mostly, really, the book is overly long, filled with mind-numbing details that are not only uninteresting but also busy-up the reading to where the broader significance of the issue at hand is lost. Read "A Conspiracy of Optimism" instead (older, but much better). Then again, that book isn't just about the Eastern NFs. The opening paragraph to Chapter 14 is one of the most laughable things I have ever seen professionally and quasi-academically published.

Review
“This book is a refreshing re-examination of current practice and helpful in suggesting a variance in approach that might be effective in terms of outcomes for the client: it is well worth reading.” (British Journal of Social Work)

“Theoretically sophisticated and very practice oriented; Mark Furlong makes a significant contribution to promoting professional practices which aim to develop the client’s ‘relational self’. A very timely and engaging book.”     (Nigel Parton, University of Huddersfield)

“Mark Furlong has written a valuable sourcebook that will appeal to a wide range of practitioners who are seeking a new yet rigorous approach to their work with clients. It draws creatively on theories of individualism, isolation, inequality, and exclusion to make a strong case for practice that supports clients to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones.”  (Rona Woodward, University of Stirling)

The Ashgate Research Companion to New Public Management, by Tom Christensen, Per Lægreid

This new in paperback edition provides a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of current research in the field of New Public Management (NPM) reform. Aimed primarily at a student readership with a special interest in contemporary public-sector reforms, The Ashgate Research Companion to New Public Management offers a refreshing and up-to-date analysis of key issues of modern administrative reforms.

Designed as a one-stop reference point and revision guide, this textbook comprises 29 chapters divided into six thematic sessions, each with chapters ranging across a variety of crucial topics in the field of New Public Management reforms and beyond.

The principal themes addressed are:
• Processes and driving forces. Basic theoretical foundations are discussed as well as the importance of institutional environments, copying, diffusion and translation of reform ideas and solutions among countries
• The question of convergence or divergence among countries. Four families of countries with different state traditions are examined: Anglo-Saxon countries, Scandinavia, Continental Europe and Asian countries.
• Developments in the 'soft' welfare sectors of hospital systems, universities and welfare administration, and the 'harder' sectors like regulation of utilities in areas such as telecommunications and energy.
• The effects and implications of NPM reforms, both the more direct and the narrower effects on efficiency and the broader impact on democracy, trust and public sector values.
• What new trends are occurring beyond the NMP movement, such as whole-of-government initiatives, Neo-Weberian models and New Public Governance as a new trend.

Covering not only the NPM movement in general but also the driving forces behind the reform and its various trajectories and special features, this important contribution is essential reading for students and anyone wanting to expand their knowledge of administrative reform.

Review
The Companion provides the first comprehensive overview of the most important changes in democratic administrative reform in the post-War era. This will equip scholars, students and policy makers with a solid foundation on which to build assessments of the new approaches to performance management, accountability and flexibility. Well written and presented, the chapters combine sound theoretical insight with useful overviews of national systems. Whether one is an ardent supporter or determined critic of these reforms, the Companion will serve as a starting point for analysis and assessment.'Mark Considine, University of Melbourne, Australia'New Public Management has swept much of the world in the past 20-30 years, a reform movement fed by its adoption by major governments and its promotion by many international agencies. Much has been written about it, puzzling over its origins, the reasons for its appeal and its consequences. This excellent volume presents a comprehensive, systematic and provocative review of how this happened, what it means, and what its effects have been. A must collection for anyone interested in contemporary administrative reform.'Joel D. Aberbach, Center for American Politics and Public Policy, UCLA, USA'If you want to understand how and why the public sector has changed in the last twenty years, and how and why it has resisted or translated change, this is the definitive account to read. The leading international researches in the field do not only tell what happened, but offer realistic and compelling theoretical explanations.'Werner Jann, University of Potsdam, Germany'What exactly has been discovered about the much debated phenomenon of "New Public Management" (NPM), after nearly 20 years of research? If anything can tell us that, it should be this weighty book, written by nearly 40 academics who have debated the issues in international forums for 15 years or so... the book will be an essential source of reference because most of the world's major scholars in the field appear in it, the references alone run to some 63 pages, and it includes thoughtful and authoritative essays on most of the topics that have been discussed on the NPM conference circuit over the past two decades. ... This collection is definitely an important milestone in NPM research...' Governance'This work helps to bring clarity to the evolution and impact of NPM reform, particularly in Europe and Australia and New Zealand... Each chapter is well written and presents its information in accessible language that can be understood by a non-expert... this is an impressive work and is highly recommended for students and researchers interested in studying the movement.' Building Regions: The Regionalization of the World Order (The International Political Economy of New Regionalisms Series), by Luk, Dr Van

Regions. How they emerge and how they are dramatically changing the appearance of the present 'world of states' and its related forms of governance from local to global levels is analysed in this monograph. But what are regions? Regions can be small or huge. They can be part of a single state, be composed out of different states or stretched out across borders. They can be important recognized economic, social or cultural entities or they can be largely ignored by the people who live on a region's territory. They can be well-defined with clear cut boundaries as is the case in so-called 'constitutional regions' or they can be fuzzy as for instance in cross-border regions. In sum, they are not a natural kind and defining regions is not a simple task.

Luk Van Langenhove advances the concept of region building as an alternative to the construction of regions with three issues of region building being explored:

- Why are regions built in a world of states?
- How do region building processes take place?
- How are regions transforming the present world order?

Crossing disciplinary boundaries, this book is an exercise in theorizing regions and brings together under one conceptual framework, different processes and concepts such as regional integration, devolution, federalism, and separatism and refines the social constructionist view on regions

Review
'Luk Van Langenhove puts forward an innovative theory drawn from social constructivism to explain one of the most significant developments in contemporary international relations - the regionalization of world order. In doing so, he has produced an important comparative study that will be of interest to students of regionalism in all parts of the world.' John Ravenhill, Australian National University, Australia 'This is an impressive attempt to develop what Van Langenhove calls a "social constructionist" theory of regions built on discursive, realist and functionalist perspectives. What gives this book its innovative product differentiation in a crowded field is that the author places regional integration and regional devolution under one theoretical umbrella. Building Regions is an original exercise in theorizing regions.' Richard Higgott, University of Warwick, UK 'Van Langenhove provides us with a timely and challenging contribution to the debate on how and why sovereign states create different forms of regional governance. In doing so he illustrates the importance of the European integration experience as a response to the forces of globalization and the shift to multipolarity that are currently changing the world. Building Regions is a highly recommendable read for all those who want to better understand the complex interactions between sovereign states, supranational regional organizations and subnational regions in our 21st century world.' Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council 'The strength of this volume lies in its challenge to state centric conceptualisations of the international system and its disaggregation of the region along the interesting axes (i.e. as rational systems with statehood features performing intentional acts which are reciprocated and generative of identity [pp. 81-8]). This return to a comprehensive view of regions' domain coverage fits in with recent trends.' Political Studies Review

Palmville

The train stopped at Palmville, and Sarah Ida had a sudden thought. What if she didn’t get off? What if she just rode on to the end of the line? Maybe she could find a place where everything was new and she could start all over again.

But people would ask questions. How old are you? … Only ten and a half? What are you doing here all by yourself? Someone would be sure to find her and bring her back.

Anyway, it was too late. Aunt Claudia had already seen her. Aunt Claudia was at the station, looking through the train window and waving.

Sarah Ida picked up her suitcase.

"Here, little lady, I’ll help you with that," said the porter.

"I can carry it myself," she said, and she dragged it off the train.

Aunt Claudia gave her a kiss that smelled like cough drops. Then they took a taxi. They rode through town, and Aunt Claudia talked. "You’ve grown, but I knew you the minute I saw you. You’ve got your mother’s pretty brown eyes, but you’ve got your father’s jaw. Look – over there. That’s our new supermarket. Things may seem quiet to you here after the city, but I think you’ll like Palmville. It’s getting to be quite a city, too."

Sarah Ida said nothing.

"We’re on Grand Avenue," said Aunt Claudia. "It’s the main street." The taxi turned off the avenue and stopped in front of a square, gray house.

While Aunt Claudia paid the driver, Sarah Ida looked at the house. It was old, with a new coat of paint. It had spidery-looking porches and balconies.

They went inside.

"There’s the telephone," said Aunt Claudia. "Your mother wanted you to call as soon as you got here."

"Why?" asked Sarah Ida.

"So she’d know you got here all right."

"You call her," said Sarah Ida.

"All right." Aunt Claudia went to the telephone. "I’ll dial the number for you."

"Don’t dial it for me," said Sarah Ida. "I’m not going to talk to her."

Aunt Claudia’s mouth opened and closed. Then she said, "It’s been a long trip, and I know you’re tired. Come on upstairs. Shall I help you with your suitcase?"

"No," said Sarah Ida.

They climbed the stairs. Aunt Claudia opened a door. "This is your room."

Sarah Ida looked around the room. It wasn’t bad. She rather liked the rag rugs on the dark wood floor, and she didn’t mind the rocking chair. But the window curtains were fussy. So was the bed cover. And the pictures on the wall were terrible – a fat girl looking at a robin, and a horse with a blue ribbon around its neck.

She waited for Aunt Claudia to ask, "How do you like it?" She was going to answer, "I like plain things."

But Aunt Claudia didn’t ask. "Maybe you want to unpack now," she said. "We can talk later."

"We can talk now if you want to." Sarah Ida sat down on the bed.

Aunt Claudia sat in the rocking chair.

Great children's book to teach about handling money!
By Amy Lynn Greenwell
I remember when I was in third grade, I would go to my grandmother's house and ask for her to read me The Shoeshine Girl over and over again. This book is great to help children understand the importance of unselfishness and responsibility with money. Sarah Ida's character in the book starts off being a cold and uncaring little girl, but through her experiences with living with Aunt Claudia and working for Al at the shoeshine stand, she becomes a responsible and loving child. I would highly recommend reading this book with children, it is a great story and they will learn the moral of responsibility from it too!

The book is called Shoeshine Girl by Clycle Robert Bulla. This book started with a girl named Sarah Ida who was told to get on a train to Palmville but she didn't want to. She had no choice but to go. She planned on staying and did she get off? Well....read the book and find out. They got the title of the story when Sarah went to find a job and found one in a shoeshine stand and one day Al, her boss, went to buy some shoe polish. Do you know what happened afterwards? Al got hit by a car and was sent to the hospital. Sarah Ida kept the shoeshine stand open and polished people's shoes all by herself. Do you think it's good so far? Do you also think that Sarah Ida is a responsible person for taking care of the store?
We learn that if you want money, you need to earn money yourself. We like this book because it talks about character's feelings. For example, Sarah felt hurt when Sarah wanted money and Aunt Claudia didn't give her money because she said "Your mom told me not to give you any." We disliked the part when Al got hurt. We like this book because it was good and because it was talking about her life. Her life changed a lot throughout the story. She use to be with people that are so awful. It was awful because she had friends that would take things. What we think that changed her life was being with Al and her aunt because they taught her how to cook, the value of money, and how to polish a shoe.
We think that this book would be good for people who want to find a job. We also recommend this book to fourth and fifth graders.

Amazon.com Review
Carol Shields's collection of short stories is the definitive anthology of this genre of her work. It contains all previously published stories and one entirely new: "Segue," her last work. She died of cancer in July of 2003, after fighting the good fight, for the second time. The book is introduced by Margaret Atwood, another widely read Canadian author, who was a longtime friend and admirer of Shields.

The stories are truly remarkable, combining great humor with poignant observation--an exploration of the idiosyncracies of our friends, lovers, spouses, and children, and the gift of being a true storyteller. She glories in writing about the mundane: grocery shopping, ballet lessons, mowing the lawn; and in the quirky, as in a young boy's grandfather who becomes a "naturist," a grandmother who was North America's Turkey Queen in Ramona, California, and wore a dress made completely of turkey feathers. Her writing is full of wonder and serendipity: "Roger, aged thirty, employed by the Gas Board, is coming out of a corner grocers carrying a mango in his left hand. He went in to buy an apple and came out with this." Now, what will turn out to be important here: Roger's age, his employment, why the mango instead of the apple, and, is he left-handed? Carol Shields will sort it all out for the reader, in the most enjoyable way possible. While her stories are accessible, they are never trivial. Each one is finely crafted, illuminating something about a person, a relationship, an event.

In "Segue," Max and Jane begin their Sunday morning buying bread and flowers; he, an accomplished novelist, she, a writer of sonnets. They proceed to luncheon at their daughter's house, return home to conversation, reading, roast chicken, and evening reverie. Jane reflects upon her aging body: "My aging is me too, as well as the subject of my current sonnet. Only two years ago the idea of aging belonged to the whole world. It was background. I hadn't been touched by it then. Now I am." Touched by age and encroaching illness, Carol Shields wrote one last marvelous story.

In her foreword, Margaret Atwood, who visited Shields only two months before she died, writes: "We did not speak of her illness. She preferred to be treated as a person who was living, not one who was dying." This attitude of mind is reflected in the fabric of all her work, in its clarity, its appreciation of the absurd, and in her understanding of the human condition. --Valerie Ryan

From Publishers Weekly
Shields, who died in 2003, was best known for her novels (The Stone Diaries; Unless), though she published three collections of stories over as many decades, here elegantly gathered and introduced by fellow Canadian and friend Margaret Atwood. Appearing first is her last unpublished tale, "Segue," about an aging couple in failing health - he a famous novelist, she a writer of sonnets - who grow apart as they take "responsibility for [their] own dying bodies." The story serves as a poignant tribute. Overall, Shields's touch is gorgeously light, her tales capturing brief, evanescent moments in the busy lives of couples, mothers and lonely wives. If a few entries seem too brief or lack development, "Hazel" (from The Orange Fish) demonstrates all the elements of Shields's mastery: an ordinary widow, perhaps too polite for her own good, finds a satisfying job as an itinerant kitchen demonstrator and discovers that her timidity and self-effacement can actually be turned to her advantage. From the same collection, the story "Collision" draws on Shields's extended travels and is set in a "small ellipsoid state in eastern Europe," where two lonely people of exotically different background and language collide on a rainy night; the story pursues a separate "biography" of each of the lovers with "every narrative scrap... equally honored." In "Edith-Esther," a story from Shields's last collection, the author prophetically portrays the eponymous protagonist, an 80-year-old novelist, as a "rare bird," pestered by her biographer for "some spiritual breeze" he can put into his book about her. She resists, but the biographer reworks her life the way he wants and in the end, to her dismay, refashions her work as uplifting - the last thing she intended it to be. Uplifting or not, this is a volume full of grace and wisdom.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Shields, a critically acclaimed Canadian writer who died in 2003, was best known for fictionalizing the lives of women. In this collection she shows her wider range. Most critics recommend these stories for any Shields fan and as a starting point for new readers. Only The New York Times Book Review described her work as “sometimes mannered linguistic musings” that “conjure up a very writerly writer honing her technical and theoretical skills and paying little attention to conventions of plot and character.” Playing with language, exploring intimate relationships, and examining small town life through Shields’s eyes are all contained in this volume.

In our profile and interview with Carol Shields in our Nov/Dec 2002 issue, we wrote Where to Start: “The Stone Diaries displays Shields’s virtuosity in creating a life’s history through intimate language and an intriguing format. Unless continues with unprecedented power as Shields’s multi-layered narrative weaves Reta’s story through the reader’s consciousness.”

A final bouquet
By LiLa
From a too-early departed Canadian treasure. Shields could turn a phrase, or take her reader from a wink of an eye to a catch in the throat, like no one else. She was a trickster of a storyteller - start you off slow, comfortable and easy - then wham! Off you'd go into a character, or life, that delights and surprises.

The first two lines of "Pardon":
On Friday afternoon Milly stopped at Ernie's Cards 'n' Things to buy a mea culpa card for her father-in-law, whom she had apparently insulted.
"Sorry," Ernie's wife said in her testy way."We're all out."

I love the off-handed humor and grace of the phrase "apparently insulted". This last collection is a departing gift, and should be read accordingly. Each page turned slowly, each paragraph unwrapped and savored, each word read as though it was the last - "part of the bliss they would one day gladly surrender."

Beautiful stories from a gifted late writer...
By CoffeeGurl
Carol Shields died of Breast Cancer three years ago, a sad loss of a gifted, wonderful Canadian writer. Collected Stories features several of the most wonderful stories I have read. Her quirky humor comes to life in this wonderful collection. Though the stories may come across as incredibly mundane because it deals with every day, ordinary people, said stories give a wonderful portrayal of characters you can definitely relate to. My favorite stories are "Invitations," "Taking the Train," "Pardon," "Segue," "Fuel for the Fire," and "Our Men and Women." This is a large collection of previously released stories and her last effort before she passed away called "Segue." This is a beautiful collection you won't want to miss. I read The Stone Diaries when it first came out eleven years ago and my impression now is the same one I had when I read the aforementioned novel: Carol Shields was a master storyteller.

One of the most important books of the 90s
By domu13@yahoo.com
I cannot, absolutely cannot, stress of how much import this book is. Safina writes of politics, poverty, economics, history, technical minutiae, and biological science with the flair of a poet - combined with passages that will make you weep for their ability to communicate the visceral experience of what it's like beneath the water. It's not just a book about marine biology - it's an extended essay on the forces that have shaped civilization at the end of the millennium and its relation to the world at large. The hardest thing is to get across how compulsively readable it is - digressions into issues involving privitization of land and the beuracratical nightmare of listing a species as endangered are communicated so lucidly, cleverly, and with such humanity that the book never devloves into that category called boring that would cause most people to skip it. Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, I wish everyone in that region would read Safina's exhaustive overview of the destruction of the salmon fisheries. Only now, later in life, do I have a clear picture of what those headlines I saw as a kid even meant.
And somewhere within all this, you discover that not only is Safina an objective scientist, an environmentalist who cares for the well being of other humans and is actually concerned for the plight of those who make their living off the seas; he is also a gifted writer.
I kid you not. This is a book about marine science. It made me bawl like a baby. It is, despite it's complex issues, so innately human. And that's what makes it essential. Safina is no tree hugging environmentalist - he appraises it with a keen eye for its beauty and its terror but is also a firece guardian - of the system which allows us to live with it. He has extraordinary empathy for those right minded individuals who have lost their jobs due to overfishing and the political nightmare that has followed. What provokes his anger is how that system is abused; and what emerges is that it is never a case of the usual solutions that pit conservationist vs. fisherman - it is a case of the entire economic situation we live in writ large that has led to our abuse of the oceans.
And despite the unrelenting nightmare you face during his journey, as it seems the whole ocean is vanishing before your eyes; there is hope, in the unlikeliest of places and his ability to essay that hope is miraculous and affirming.
Howard Hall, the legendary underwater photographer, said something like: if you were to start diving today you'd see a world you couldn't imagine... But it's nothing like what you would have seen only thirty years ago. I think any sceptic, or even the most hardened of political conservatives who believe the environment is designed to withstand relentless punishment, cannot disregard the arguements made in the book. I started diving only recently. I'm a young guy. Chances are I won't be able to ever see the great coral reefs of the South Pacific - they won't be there. This book will convince you that our children will not be able to experience the oceans and its life that we have still today; unless we change the essential underpinnings of how we relate to each other as a society we will not be able to restore this.
Enough ranting. Just get this book, read it, and try to tell me you weren't fascinated. This single book will change your worldview, and teach you in so many disciplines, that you can't ignore it. And please, some company publish this in the UK for the Brits pronto... Until then, Mr. Safina is my hero and I hope he writes more.

Entertaining Science
By susan cassels
Is it a novel, a journey through the seas, or a scientific work describing the demise of fishes around the world while offering policy suggestions? It doesn't matter what kind of book it is- it may be all in one. What matters is that Carl Safina has written a book, Song for the Blue Ocean, which tells the story of living oceans; a book that catches your attention through adventure and interesting characters, witty writing, strong emotion, and terse opinions strewn amongst simple science.
In the preface, Safina mentions that he will be our guide and interpreter, but ultimately we have to make our own decisions regarding what the oceans and their inhabitants really mean to us. Nonetheless, I feel quite comfortable following Safina's lead. After receiving his doctorate in ecology and starting a career as an academic, Safina decided that he needed to take a stronger stand on conservation and scientific policy regarding the world's imperiled fish. He founded and now directs the National Audubon Society's Living Oceans Program, and wrote Song for the Blue Ocean merely 10 years after graduate school. Safina has a unique and open perspective on the state of the world's fishes, once as a commercial and sport fisherman, and now as a world-renowned scientist. Personally, I feel quite comfortable allowing Safina's guide and interpretations to influence my own opinions.
Song for the Blue Ocean is split into three distinct sections: the Northeast, the Northwest, and the Far Pacific. In addition, each section focuses on an imperiled species, namely the Giant Bluefin Tuna, pacific Salmon, and coral reefs; nonetheless, Safina is able to depict the bigger picture of the world's fisheries and common problems with these three examples. Not only does the reader get an inside look at fishing culture and the conservationist culture, but we also learn about the bigger picture of fisheries, i.e. externalities of fishing like by-catch, various fishing styles (from spear fishing to cyanide poisoning), the state of these fisheries, and the huge political aspects of fishing. Safina artfully intertwines information about national and international agencies involved in the conservation of fisheries, like CITES and the Endangered Species Act, without it sounding like a lecture. We learn about various species of sponges and coral reef fish, or the difference between steelhead trout and Chinook salmon, during the while we are enchanted by Safina's adventures floating down an icy Northwest river or almost dying of nitrogen narcosis while SCUBA diving 160 feet deep in the Palau islands.
The book flows very smoothly. Safina builds up the story, grasps ahold of your attention, and then leads you through the steps until he has made his point clear. For instance, Safina talks of the beautiful large and diverse trees in the Pacific Northwest, then introduces the concept of a snag- a tree that has died, but continues to stand upright for many years. Once it finally falls, hundreds of species move in, under, through, and around the fallen log. Finally, we understand that clear cutting and second growth forests near rivers do not provide adequate habitat for spawning salmon, which rely on the deep pool behind the fallen snag to deposit their eggs. All the while, this simple chain of events is presented in a very romantic and mysterious way, and it all seems so important. Safina also captures my attention with the conversations between the amazing characters in his book. They are funny, disturbing, happy, sad- they are martyrs, antagonists and clueless. They provide much of the information in the book, but they also provide relief from the continuous science and bleak outlook on the state of the fisheries.
Truthfully, there is not much about Song for the Blue Ocean that I did not enjoy, but Safina does tend to dwell on the past, with a few too many "back in the good old days" stories. This type of talk can be fun and contagious, nonetheless too much of this babble is unhelpful in the context of conservation. Similarly, Safina slips from time to time with sarcastic remarks. Some may find this witty, but I find it ineffective. Enjoyment of this book also depends on what your expectations are, some may find it too political, or others may not find it scientific enough. Safina approaches his journey with an open mind- and this is also the best way to approach his book.
Safina's unique perspective lends itself to an original story. He is a weary scientist in the middle of a debate over the state of the world's fisheries, who wants to discover the truth for himself. His journey takes him to all corners of the ocean, where he meets and listens to real people whose livelihood depends on the fish. His book therefore portrays all angles of the story, which allows the reader to form her own opinion (as Safina wanted). Safina does distinguish between fact and opinion on a regular basis; nonetheless he is not afraid to express his opinion, sometimes very strongly.
This book is for anyone- scientists and non-scientists. Young and old alike. People who want to learn more about the worlds imperiled fisheries will get their fill. Others who are mildly interested in fish, or fishing, or the world's oceans will be entertained. Even people who just pick up the book without any preface will find the writing, unique characters, and Safina's journeys across the Atlantic and Pacific extremely refreshing. This book really is all-in-one. Safina has mastered the art of hybridization, with perfect proportions of science, policy, and adventure.

Absolute poetry
By calikris4u
I'm only about halfway through this book, but it's so moving that I decided I needed to rave now. Carl Safina uses an amazing grasp of language to paint mental pictures of what he writes about. I work in the scientific community and have spent a lot of time on that water, and his writings are not only objective and scientifically sound, he constructs them in such a way that they are beautiful. You will have a thirst for each topic and region of which he writes. I borrowed this book from the library and had vowed to buy it before I'd finished the first chapter. It has only improved as I've proceeded.
