In his foreword to Vegetarian Times Everything Vegan, Neal Barnard, MD, founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, lays out the science supporting the health and nutrition benefits of a vegan or plant-based diet. Dr. Barnard cites studies that prove how choosing to eat vegan can help reduce the risk of high cholesterol (and the diseases associated with the condition), certain cancers, and diabetes. He also shows how a vegan diet is one of the best, longest-lasting choices for slimming down.

But, when it comes to eliminating meat, eggs, and dairy from your diet, tasting is believing. Vegetarian Times Everything Vegan offers fresh, delicious ideas for every meal of the day with recipes for smoothies, appetizers, sandwiches, pastas, soups, main dishes, baked goods, and more. All recipes come with full nutritional analyses to show just how healthy each dish is. Other features include a Menu Ideas section that puts together special occasion menus; tip boxes and sidebars sprinkled throughout the book that offer serving suggestions and break down the basics on shopping, prepping, and trimming time in the kitchen; and informative sections on wine pairing, meat substitutes, bean types, and rice varieties. As for the recipes themselves, from easy adaptations like meaty Portobello Mushroom Burgers to sublime global cuisine offerings such as Forbidden Rice Bibimbap (a crispy-chewy fried rice dish), there's plenty to sink your teeth into without sacrificing your commitment to a vegan lifestyle.

Founded in 1974, Vegetarian Times is published monthly and has more than amillion readers worldwide. Never returned a cookbook before.
By Mac
I love Vegetarian Times. I assumed I'd love this book. I wanted to love this book. But I just don't. I didn't even notice the mistake with the eggs yet (as I've learned from other reviews), so it has nothing to do with that. I think that if your main focus in eating vegan is simply to avoid animal products, you might be OK with this. But part of why I eat vegan is for the health benefits, and for me that includes reducing my dependence on processed or prepared foods -- even vegan processed or prepared foods. There was just too much of that in here. I can figure out on my own how to substitute veggie crumbles for ground beef. I can grasp how to substitute vegan mozzarella shreds or vegan Parmesan for real mozzarella or real Parmesan. I don't need a cookbook for that. I felt very much like some of these recipes were simply pulled from the VT archives and converted. They're not vegan, they're veganized. Big difference. I'm not saying that every recipe includes processed stuff, but a lot of them do.

Many also rely on frozen veggies. I'm sure the intention there is to speed things up. But the fact is, I personally dislike the taste and texture of most frozen vegetables (except peas and edamame) so I prefer to cook with fresh.

Overall - apart from the issues I've already mentioned - I was surprised that very little in this collection excited me or fired up my imagination or made say "Wow! I can't wait to try that!" It just wasn't there for me. Even the pictures, which are nice, didn't help me shake my overall lack of enthusiasm for the recipes. I own dozens of veg and vegan cookbooks. And it's never even crossed my mind to return one before. But I see very little point in keeping this one. (Although that Morning Glory loaf does look pretty decent.)

Interestingly, I bought another newly released vegan cookbook at the same time, and my reaction has been the complete opposite - I can barely put the darn thing down before I wind up picking it up again and daydreaming about what to try next. Appetite for Reduction: 125 Fast and Filling Low-Fat Vegan Recipes, has really knocked my socks off, and my 3-week-old copy is already covered in cooking spatters. I've made at least 15 of the recipes, every one good. They aren't fancy-schmantzy for the most part. Just good, easy, straightforward, super-tasty stuff that you could actually make on a Wednesday night after work with the stuff you already have on hand (assuming that stuff like quinoa and nutritional yeast are things you typically have on hand). To my amazement, even my omnivore spouse and my uber-picky omnivore mother have given the thumbs up to the recipes I've made from it. I can't recommend it enough.

But I'm sad that I didn't have that kind of chemistry with VT's Everything Vegan.

Good overall, but needs some adjustments
By Kyra_Athena
I had very high hopes for this cookbook. I really did. That said, I believe the intent was good, but the execution was lacking.

First off, I would like to mention that I have been a vegetarian for quite some time and recently became a vegan. I also cook often, on a daily basis. I also have over 100 cookbooks in my kitchen. I know my way around a kitchen.

I bought the cookbook after reviewing a recipe for Brussel Sprouts found in the Vegetarian Times magazine as a preview. I found that recipe quite pleasing. I'd definitely cook it again, but considering it was the best recipe to me in the whole cookbook, that doesn't say a lot.

My biggest complaint so far is that many of the spices/seasonings are off in some of the recipes. Sorry, but a Latin or Mediterranean dish needs to represent that cuisine and not be so bland that I may as well have just eaten a naked carrot stick. I had to open up my spice chest and add spices to try and save a dish from absolute mediocrity.

Some of the recipes could have been easier. I always follow the directions entirely the first time through a recipe. There are easier ways.

I also tried the morning glory loaf. I have been baking bread from scratch for almost 10 years now and this was one of the worst breads I have ever encountered. The dry to wet ingredients ratio is way off. It was inedible to me but the crows and squirrels liked it.

Making a recipe harder than it needs to be and then not being rewarding is a good way to turn some one off to something new.

I also felt this was more a collection of side dishes, which could be served together as a meal, than one-dish meals or even main dishes.

Some of these recipes were simple while others required harder to find ingredients. I cannot say that many of these recipes were entirely budget friendly either, especially considering the number of servings and that they probably couldn't be served later as leftovers or tomorrow's lunch.

Word of advice, books by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, Isa Chandra Moskowitz, Terri Hope Romero are far better.

way too uptight vegans
By Artis
One typo with an egg and everyone is freaking out? I have to say, I almost cringe if I have to tell people I'm vegan because they think I'm going to be some uptight person like most of the people who wrote these reviews. Relax, it was an egg and obviously a mistake, get over it. If you do, you will find well illustrated, easy to follow book full of a wide variety of recipes that are pretty quick to throw together and don't require 100 hard to find ingredients. Even the few recipes that do call for a more exotic ingredient, give you an alternative if you can't find it. I for one appreciate not having to buy speciality ingredients that I will only use again for one recipe I'm not sure I like yet. Someone else commented that they don't like using frozen vegetables...then don't, use fresh, they are just trying to show that you can make these recipes quickly and with a well stocked pantry you can make just about anything in this book. There are such a wide variety of recipes here from appetizers to cupcakes and everything I've made so far is good. I ate raw for six months and after having to make my own nut milks and every other ingredient from scratch it is a life saver to be able to use some pre made ingredients like vegan cheese. Again if you don't want to use processed cheese then use the recipes in the book to make your own cheese. You complained that you are creative enough to swap out eggs and veganize recipes on your own but you can't figure out how to swap fresh vegetables for frozen?

From Publishers Weekly
To protect American eyes from the depravity of flapper-era films such as Virgins in Cellophane , the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association developed the "Production Code." This excellent, lively study examines the "raucous debate" sparked by the Code over the morals and ideals of American movies. English professor Leff (Oklahoma State) and American history professor Simmons (University of Nebraska) present the course censorship took in 11 troublesome films from Gone with the Wind to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? , showing the Code to have been "as integral to movie-making as soundstages and back lots." The authors focus on Joe Breen, the power behind the Code-enforcing Hays Office, whose tough yet benevolent censorship left him "caught between the need to uphold the Code and the desire to relax its more unreasonable standards." Filled with hilarious anecdotes, this is an important chronicle of film history. Photos not seen by PW .

From Library Journal
Although it is probably Will Hays who is remembered as the enforcer of film morality, it was Joseph Breen (with the unwitting aid of Mae West) who put teeth in the Motion Picture Production Code. Its power was that of the purse: until a certificate was promised, banks did not make production loans. Following a brief overview of the code's establishment, several well-known films which had code problems are examined, from Dead End and Gone with the Wind to Lolita and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf . This is a useful adjunct to such works as Murray Schumach's The Face on the Cutting Room Floor (LJ 8/64) and Jack Vizzard's amusing See No Evil (LJ 2/1/70; o.p.).

Review
"A readable, intimate account of the rise to near-tyrannical power, and the fall to well-deserved ignominy, of the old Production Code Administration."―Atlantic Monthly

"A valuable insight into our own innocence and naiveté."―New York Times Book Review

"The triumph of Leff and Simmons's fine work is that they have reminded us of how fatuous and inimical a code of conduct can be: how tempting it is as a theoretical answer, and how intrinsically flawed it is as a working solution."―Times of London

The Politics of Show Business
By Acute Observer
The Dame in the Kimono, Leff & Simmons

The two authors are university professors in English at Oklahoma State University, and constitutional history at the University of Nebraska. The book is dedicated to their wives. The threats of federal and state censorship forced the movie industry to create a Production Code to protect the morals of America. [People may say they want squeaky-clean pictures, but they also watch sensational movies like "Blow Up".] Show Business is inherently dirty or sexy because it presents the novel and unusual that people want to see. Think of those politicians whose private lives were exposed. Aristotle wrote of the cleansing effects of seeing crimes on stage. Did morality plays in the past centuries provide this like many films in the past decades? The `Acknowledgments' lists the very many who helped the authors.

The `Preface' tells about the long-suppressed 1931 "Maltese Falcon" movie. The major companies featured sex, wise-cracks, and double entendre to attract paying customers (p.xii). The threat of a nationwide Catholic boycott led to the PCA in 1934 (p.xiii). Some pre-1934 movies are available today. Censorship forced writers to be cleaner and cleverer. Did such classic restraint result in better movies? The authors chose eleven movies to use as examples. This book tells how the Production Code was created, worked, and finally ended. [Around the time when movie theaters went out of business.]

Part I (Chapters 1 to 3) starts with the fantasy "America lost her innocence" (p.3). That depends on how far back you go. It could go back to the 1830s when the factory system came to New England to end small owner-operated businesses. When was there ever a lack of scandal among actors and actresses? The censorship bills in 1921 coincided with the economic depression. [The earlier silent films also covered controversial topics, like "The Jungle"] Performers had to sign a "morals clause"; producers and directors did not. Some films are described (p.6). Note how the economic bad times resulted in more calls for censorship (p.8). The Production Code was wanted by Investment Bankers for their growing business (p.11). Sensational movies with sex and violence were profitable (p.14). Violence had a "moral value" (p.15). Falling profits eroded the Code (p.26). Hollywood's business followed the balance sheet (p.35). A new Production Code would prevent state censors (p.37). Investment Bankers were an ally (p.47). The real threat that credible was by the Catholic Church; a boycott would cripple Hollywood (p.52).

Part II (Chapter 4 to 11) discusses eleven movies and the censorship conflicts behind their scripts. It seems any story that is dramatic would have censorship problems. A sign of the cross would be objectionable to British censors (like `Dracula'). A bland movie might not do well at the box office. You will be able to decode scenes from old movies. A saloon with dancing girls represented a brothel. These chapters show a lot of research went into this book. These films are seldom available today on TV (like many other B&W movies). [While I've seen a few of these movies on TV, I don't remember much.] You may find some of these details interesting, but it is the finished product that is important, not details of the production.

Many know that the book is usually better than the movie; this book explains why. There are a lot more people involved in creating a movie than for most books. Modifying the story could attract those who read the book. This book also explains how movies are made. Money is raised from `Wall Street' investors, given to Hollywood studios to produce a movie (story, actors, directors, etc.), which is then advertised to generate paying customers. Usually this works well. Sometimes there are clunkers, other times big hits. Many people go to the movies every week so there is an audience for these products.

TOTAL WASTE OF TIME
By Zangiku
for those who expect actually to learn something from a history book, this is not for you. it sounds like a conversation overheard on a barstool between two specialists in the same field. ("an' remember the time Mae West wore those tassells on her--?" "an' the catholic elite got so upset!" "stop, stop, i'm laughing too hard!") we are not, for example, told anything about the catholic churchmen's campaign to push thru the film censorship regulations to begin with, nor even who Mae West was, let alone exactly what she said & did onstage that was loved by her "tittering audiences" and cut from her film versions. lots of itty-bitty details from letters the authors had access to, completely unaccompanied by contexts or explanations of the larger picture. in short, there is no real history here. it reads like one long private joke. there are even lots of fun puns and double entendres in the writing, whoopee! more about the background and agenda of the production code can be learnt in 2 pages from the first chapter of Koppes & Black's "Hollywood Goes to War." (for anyone interested in hollywood censorship for real, try Black's "Hollywood Censored" ISBN 978-0521565929.) the only thing of value here is the actual text of the production code in the appendix. that's the one star.

Best book on censorship of American movies
By yockoon
This is far and away the best book I have seen on the various censorship regimes under which American movies have had to labour over the years, comprehensive and delightfully readable.

I liked the story but it was not deep. Perhaps to easy to read. I finished it in a day. Sorry

Not Impressed
By NinerFan
I enjoyed other Tracey Bateman books such as A Love So Tender and A Season For Grace, so I thought I would give this a try. I was disappointed. The writing was bland and the Hope character was weak. She still pined for Andy even after he left her! There was quite a bit of religion that could have left space for character building. I just wasn't impressed.

Bill Gates en sus propias palabras recoge la sabiduría, la perspicacia y el ingenio del creador de Microsoft, uno de los hombres más ricos del mundo y el filántropo más poderoso de la historia.

De Lisa Rogak autora bestseller de The New York Times.

The House Of Mirth, by Edith Wharton

Striking, sophisticated and witty, Lily Bart lives a life of expensive taste and civilised society in turn of the century New York. But nearing thirty and still unmarried, Lily’s place in society becomes uncertain without a husband to maintain her lifestyle and social standing. After rejecting several offers of marriage, Lily’s life spirals out of control as she begins an innocent relationship with a friend’s husband, Gus Trenor, and is accused of adultery. Destitute and alone, Lily realizes that she has lost her chance at happiness with the only man she truly ever loved.

The House of Mirth was Edith Wharton’s first important work of literature. Written in the style of a novel of manners, Wharton’s depiction of social cruelty and the perils of elitism remains relevant to this day. The House of Mirth was adapted for film by Terrence Davies in 2000, starring Gillian Anderson as Lily Bart, Dan Aykroyd as Gus Trenor, and Eric Stoltz as Lawrence Seldon.

Amazon.com Review
"The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth," warns Ecclesiastes 7:4, and so does the novel by Edith Wharton that takes its title from this call to heed. New York at the turn of the century was a time of opulence and frivolity for those who could afford it. But for those who couldn't and yet wanted desperately to keep up with the whirlwind, like Wharton's charming Lily Bart, it was something else altogether: a gilded cage rather than the Gilded Age.

One of Wharton's earliest descriptions of her heroine, in the library of her bachelor friend and sometime suitor Lawrence Selden, indicates that she appears "as though she were a captured dryad subdued to the conventions of the drawing room." Indeed, herein lies Lily's problem. She has, we're told, "been brought up to be ornamental," and yet her spirit is larger than what this ancillary role requires. By today's standards she would be nothing more than a mild rebel, but in the era into which Wharton drops her unmercifully, this tiny spark of character, combined with numerous assaults by vicious society women and bad luck, ultimately renders Lily persona non grata. Her own ambivalence about her position serves to open the door to disaster: several times she is on the verge of "good" marriage and squanders it at the last moment, unwilling to play by the rules of a society that produces, as she calls them, "poor, miserable, marriageable girls.

Lily's rather violent tumble down the social ladder provides a thumbnail sketch of the general injustices of the upper classes (which, incidentally, Wharton never quite manages to condemn entirely, clearly believing that such life is cruel but without alternative). From her start as a beautiful woman at the height of her powers to her sad finale as a recently fired milliner's assistant addicted to sleeping drugs, Lily Bart is heroic, not least for her final admission of her own role in her downfall. "Once--twice--you gave me the chance to escape from my life and I refused it: refused it because I was a coward," she tells Selden as the book draws to a close. All manner of hideous socialite beasts--some of whose treatment by Wharton, such as the token social-climbing Jew, Simon Rosedale, date the book unfortunately--wander through the novel while Lily plummets. As her tale winds down to nothing more than the remnants of social grace and cold hard cash, it's hard not to agree with Lily's own assessment of herself: "I have tried hard--but life is difficult, and I am a very useless person. I can hardly be said to have an independent existence. I was just a screw or a cog in the great machine I called life, and when I dropped out of it I found I was of no use anywhere else." Nevertheless, it's even harder not to believe that she deserved better, which is why The House of Mirth remains so timely and so vital in spite of its crushing end and its unflattering portrait of what life offers up. --Melanie Rehak

From Library Journal
Wharton's account of the ill-fated life of Lily Bart receives a perfunctory treatment in this audio program. It is New York in the early 20th century; Lily loves Lawrence Selden, but he sees her as a fortune hunter, with tragic consequences. The author excels at delineating the ways money, romance, and social standing intertwine in the society of the time. Included is a lengthy introduction by Wharton biographer R.W.B. Lewis that sets the work in the context of the writer's life and career. Casual listeners may consider the preface too long and scholarly, and those coming to the novel for the first time may be put off by learning the outcome and by hearing Lewis's uncertainty about whether it is a masterpiece. Anna Fields handles the narration adequately but strains to create masculine voices and makes most of the women too flighty. As a result, the characters seem more trivial than Wharton intended. Not recommended. Michael Adams, CUNY Graduate Ctr.

Review

“This is an admirably edited volume that includes a wide range of texts by Wharton and illuminating documents from the period. The editors set The House of Mirth in the context of European as well as American novelistic practices, greatly expanding our understanding of Wharton’s first major and arguably finest novel.” ― Carol J. Singley, Rutgers University-Camden

“Too often pigeon-holed as the work of a buttoned-up proper ‘lady,’ The House of Mirth is restored in this edition to its full cultural context. Critics have downplayed Wharton’s connection to popular culture in favor of promoting her status as a canonical author. This edition makes Wharton’s relationship to popular culture explicit by providing readers with a full dossier of materials, from fashion plates to advice columns and social commentary.” ― Augusta Rohrbach, Brown University

MY FRIEND LILY BART
By Charles Slovenski
I stumbled upon a review of the recent film of THE HOUSE OF MIRTH in the TLS and, in order to have the novel firmly fixed in my mind (that is, before the lush, seductive images of film forever eradicated Wharton's novel from me) I dragged my copy off the shelf for a re-read. It had been 16 years since I last read of Lily Bart and her life, and I didn't realize how much I had missed her. For me, this is one of the great reading experiences, one of a handful that make reading a book the deeply moving and human exchange that it is. Despite the distance of wealth, property, time and manners, Wharton manages to make Lily's world and life palpable to anyone who will listen. The clash of money, morals, personality and circumstance is infinitely developed and played out in front of a never fading natural world. Once again, I was deeply moved by Lily Bart and at the end, felt I had lost someone myself.

A Brilliant Novel Of A Brittle Society And A Tragic Heroine.
By Jana L.Perskie
Edith Wharton's "The House Of Mirth" is a sad, but brilliant commentary on the closed, repressive society of the rich, upper class, New York nobility, at the dawn of the 20th century. It is also the story of the downfall of one woman, who attempts to live by her own rules, with no sponsor and no money of her own. Her parents are dead and she lives with relatives.
Lily Bart is one of society's most eligible women, at the height of her powers, when the novel opens. Though she has little money, she has family connections, good breeding and the hope of coming into an inheritance. Beautiful and very charming, Lily has been brought up to be an ornament, as were most women of her class at that time. She is a gilded bird with a noble heart, but clearly she is not aware of the restrictions of her cage. Part of Lily's tragedy is that she does have character, spirit, and a conscience. However, she does not know how to align these attributes, with her ornamental avocation, and her ambitions to marry a wealthy man of good birth.
As expected, Lily is popular with both bachelors and married men. Most of the bachelors propose marriage at on time or another. The only man she has real affection for is her dear friend, Lawrence Seldon, a barrister, whose lack of income makes him entirely unsuitable as a husband. Lily had developed a gambling habit to support her lifestyle, and supplement her allowance. An unfortunate losing streak has put her into debt. In her naivete, she forms an unsavory business alliance with a married man. Later, she is unjustly accused of having an affair with him and their business arrangement also come to light.
Her family cuts her off without a penny. Society friends and connections reject their former darling, trying to extricate themselves from any repercussions Lily's indiscreet behavior may have on their reputations. Former friends turn vicious. The irony is that Lily has never committed any of the sins she is accused of. Several of her friends have, and frequently...but their sins are committed with the utmost discretion. Lily's crime is indiscretion. Her beaus disappear, as do her marriage prospects. The hypocrisy of her class becomes more apparent to her, as she searches for a means to survive, with all the familiar doors closed in her face.
Lily seeks employment as a seamstress in the New York City slums, and lives there also, in a humble room with no refinements. Having no formal training and no real ambition, (her ambivalence about work is obvious), she sinks into deep depression and begins to decline. Laudanum helps her to sleep, and she becomes dependent on the drug.
Lily's descent, from society's beautiful darling to a disheveled, desperate woman living in a shabby hotel room, addicted to drugs, is disturbing reading, to say the least. Her decline seems inevitable, especially after we read of her many poor and self-destructive decisions. She seems to sabotage herself. However, Lily Bart is ultimately the victim of a cruel society that sacrifices anyone who does not conform to its expectations.
After reading "House Of Mirth," for the first time several years ago, Lily's character has remained clear in my mind. I think of her from time to time with great poignance and a sense of personal loss.

"A handsome girl who flirted with a married man was merely assumed to be pressing...her opportunities."
By Mary Whipple
Published in 1905, The House of Mirth offers a blistering social commentary on the lifestyles and behavior of super-rich society. Having grown up in this society, Wharton evaluates it here as an insider, and her trenchant observations give this early novel a liveliness and verisimilitude not characteristic of "aristocratic" novels written by outsiders. Set at a time in which the old, moneyed aristocracy was being forced to admit newcomers who had made their recent fortunes through industry, the novel shows moneyed society in flux, the old guard ensuring their exclusivity against parvenus who are not the "right type," at the same time that their sons and daughters were often securing large fortunes through marriage into some of these new families.

Lily Bart, a beautiful young woman of good family whose father lost everything when she was only nineteen, is left dependent on wealthy relatives in this society until she can charm a financially secure suitor into marriage. At age twenty-nine, she is no longer a debutante, and the pressure is mounting for her to marry, though she lacks the unlimited financial resources of social rivals. Still, her wit and charm make her a delightful companion, and she is never at a loss for suitors. Intelligent enough to want a real marriage and not just a merger between families, she has resisted making a commitment to date, though the clock is ticking.

As Lily tries to negotiate a good marriage and future for herself, she is aware that the competition is fierce. Women "friends" pounce on the latest gossip and spread rumors to discredit rivals, and Lily's reputation is tainted with hints of impropriety. Her opportunities for a good marriage begin to dwindle, and when her aunt, Mrs. Peniston, dies and leaves her a bequest that covers only her debts, Lily is no longer able to compete in the society so attractive to her and begins her downward spiral.

Wharton creates a complete picture of turn-of-the-century New York society and its "important" people--their lack of scruples, their opportunism, their manipulations, and their smug self-importance, characteristics one may also see in Lily when she is part of this society, though there is a limit on how far she will stoop. But Wharton also shows how quickly a woman may become an outcast when the money runs out and she is thrown on her own resources without any training for any other kind of life. A well-developed melodrama filled with revealing details, this novel established Wharton's reputation as a novelist/commentator on the manners and morals of high society and those who would participate in it. n Mary Whipple

Native Apostles, by Edward E. Andrews

As Protestantism expanded across the Atlantic, most evangelists were not Anglo-Americans but were members of the groups that missionaries were trying to convert. Native Apostles reveals the way Native Americans, Africans, and black slaves redefined Christianity and addressed the challenges of slavery, dispossession, and European settlement.

Review
This groundbreaking monograph explores the critical roles played by Native Americans, Africans, and enslaved blacks in the spread of Protestant Christianity throughout the Atlantic world during the 17th and 18th centuries. Andrews deftly brings these forgotten missionaries to the fore, noting that their European counterparts, while seeking to spread Christianity, were not able to learn aboriginal languages and were unwilling to live in the same manner as native peoples. Various Protestant groups thus actively recruited African and Native American missionaries to spread the gospel on their behalf. Although the missions examined here were established in such disparate locales as Iroquoia, Africa, and the Caribbean, these groups were aware of the activities of others and found kinship in their shared Christianity. Over time, and to the chagrin of many of their parent religious organizations, each native group came to shape its version of Protestantism to form a unique Christian identity that appealed to its cultural norms and enabled it to create a community significantly independent of the colonizers...[A] fascinating work. (John R. Burch Library Journal (starred review) 2013-03-15)

Andrews has written a book that helps historians rethink not only native and enslaved peoples’ involvement in the process of missionizing but also the very forms and dynamics of religious history during the colonial period…In an argument that is simultaneously provocative and convincing, Andrews shows us that African and Indian Christians were part of the creation, organization, and even flourishing of mission life throughout the British Atlantic in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. (Christopher J. Bilodeau Massachusetts Historical Review 2014-01-01)

Recent studies of indigenous people’s encounters with Christianity have emphasized Native agency in adopting, resisting, and adapting to Christian overtures. Historian Andrews goes one step further and examines the lives of many American Indians (and some Africans) in the British colonies who became Protestant evangelists among their own and neighboring peoples. (C. T. Vecsey Choice 2013-10-01)

A very welcome addition. Based on an impressive number of sources by white, black, and Indian evangelists writing on both sides of the Atlantic, Native Apostles demonstrates that Indians and people of African descent were far more central and active agents in the transatlantic and circum-Atlantic evangelical movement than previously thought. (Vincent Carretta, author of Equiano, the African: Biography of a Self-Made Man)

With attention to complexity and nuance, Edward Andrews narrates the gripping story of hundreds of people of color who worked to spread Christianity in North America, the Caribbean, and West Africa. Our understanding of the religious encounter in the British Atlantic will never be the same. (Erik R. Seeman, author of Death in the New World: Cross-Cultural Encounters, 1492-1800)

Edward Andrews convincingly shows how native American and African populations took control of their encounters with Christianity in the age of empire and slavery. Native Apostles is an impressive tour through the spiritual kaleidoscope of the Atlantic world. (Jon F. Sensbach, author of Rebecca’s Revival: Creating Black Christianity in the Atlantic World)

For years, scholars of colonial America have been calling for work that bridges Atlantic, American Indian, African American, and religious history. It is finally here. Edward Andrews's provocative and persuasive assertion that we should see blacks and Indians as leading actors in Christian evangelization and racial formation sets a new benchmark in the field. (David J. Silverman, author of Red Brethren: The Brothertown and Stockbridge Indians and the Problem of Race in Early America)

A challenging book, one that aims to change the way that we write about British missions and their impact on both the missionized and the missionizers…Native Apostles, then, achieves a great deal. It is, for example, impossible to read this book and not be struck by the sheer number of native missionaries working in the British Atlantic world… Andrews is quite convincing when he argues that British proponents of missions routinely thought in terms of centering their projects on native missionaries and that mission-minded Britons eagerly looked to African and American Indian initiatives for examples of both how to proceed and how not to. Andrews is equally sure-footed in dealing with native approaches to Christianity, recognizing its appeal for native peoples without in any way losing track of the tensions and challenges Christianity brought and the partial and incomplete nature of the victories it permitted. And, of course, Andrews has written a book that is truly transatlantic. He has made himself at home on islands and mainlands, frontiers and coasts, plantations and cities, old worlds and new ones. His book shows us networks of thought and action that not only encompassed Africans, Europeans, and American Indians, but also bound them together in conversations that all those involved recognized to be of critical importance. That is an impressive set of accomplishments. (Joshua Piker Reviews in American History 2014-06-01)

In this innovative and energetically written book, Edward E. Andrews argues that ‘native’ (Indian and African) missionaries, not white ones, were at the center of colonial Atlantic missions in the British Atlantic. Historians have given too much credit to white, middle-class Anglo-European missionaries who were often culturally ignorant of the peoples they were trying to convert. Instead, noting the ‘astonishing ubiquity of native preachers,’ whose numbers almost always far exceeded those of white missionaries, Andrews emphasizes the ways in which these Indians and Africans ‘not only encouraged Christian missions, but actually led them.’… The book’s scope is impressive, and the interpretive framework compelling… Overall, Andrews’s points are important, gracefully made, well taken. This book is an excellent and much-welcomed addition to the growing literature on religion in the early modern Atlantic world, one that will surely be appreciated by scholars in the field and profitably used as an accessible introduction to colonial missions for undergraduates and graduates alike. Panaceia's Daughters: Noblewomen as Healers in Early Modern Germany (Synthesis), by Alisha Rankin

Panaceia’s Daughters provides the first book-length study of noblewomen’s healing activities in early modern Europe. Drawing on rich archival sources, Alisha Rankin demonstrates that numerous German noblewomen were deeply involved in making medicines and recommending them to patients, and many gained widespread fame for their remedies. Turning a common historical argument on its head, Rankin maintains that noblewomen’s pharmacy came to prominence not in spite of their gender but because of it.

Rankin demonstrates the ways in which noblewomen’s pharmacy was bound up in notions of charity, class, religion, and household roles, as well as in expanding networks of knowledge and early forms of scientific experimentation. The opening chapters place noblewomen’s healing within the context of cultural exchange, experiential knowledge, and the widespread search for medicinal recipes in early modern Europe. Case studies of renowned healers Dorothea of Mansfeld and Anna of Saxony then demonstrate the value their pharmacy held in their respective roles as elderly widow and royal consort, while a study of the long-suffering Duchess Elisabeth of Rochlitz emphasizes the importance of experiential knowledge and medicinal remedies to the patient’s experience of illness.

Review
“Panaceia’s Daughters places early modern women and their relationship with ‘medical cookery’ squarely in the canon of mainstream scientific pursuits. With a discerning eye, Rankin ingeniously exploits not only hitherto unexamined letters but also medical recipes and estate inventories to illuminate a fascinating lay medical world situated at the intersection of medical knowledge, charity, and patronage.”
(Justin Grosslight Arts Fuse)

“A thoughtfully written and very clearly argued work that informs many aspects of the history of gender, of science and medicine, and of practical epistemologies.” (Carla Nappi New Books in Science, Technology, and Society)

“A welcome addition to the field. . . . Rankin’s work is not only thoroughly researched and informative but also a highly enjoyable read. Through lively prose, she conveys both astute factual points and presents a clear image of the world in which these noblewomen lived. While the target audience for Panaceia’s Daughters is primarily historians working in the history of science and medicine, Germanic studies, and women’s studies, Rankin’s clear and engaging writing style makes the work accessible to non-academics with an interest in the subject. She should be commended for her finely crafted and original examination of German noblewomen and their role as healers, and her work is well worth reading for anyone with an interest in the early modern period.” (Elisabeth Brander, Washington University in St. Louis Journal of Medical Humanities)

“Alisha Rankin has published an original and groundbreaking study of noblewomen’s healing and pharmaceutical activities in early modern Germany. Rankin gives these elite women their due by enumerating and exploring their very concrete contributions to medicine and science. In so doing, she challenges those scholars who even today see women as marginal to this history.” (Renaissance Quarterly)

“This is the first carefully researched and detailed study of the healing and medical care provided by elite women in the context of early modern medical culture to be published.” (Isis)

"In Panaceia’s Daughters, Alisha Rankin describes the healing work of early modern German noblewomen. To reconstruct their knowledge and practices, Rankin has mined a truly impressive array of archival sources, including letters, diaries, chronicles, recipe books and estate inventories. She combines fascinating stories of these women’s lives with persuasive arguments about the rise of experimental method in the sixteenth century and the place of women in early modern science and medicine. The result is a highly engaging book that intervenes in some of the central historiographical debates about the Scientific Revolution." (Kathleen Crowther Early Science and Medicine)

"This excellent monograph adds an important dimension to our understanding of courtly women, medicine, and explorations of nature in early modern Europe. . . . illuminates a therapeutic activism and invigorated medical empiricism that took root in kitchens, workshops, and at the bedside in courts across the German lands." (Mitchell Hammond, University of Victoria, Canada Bulletin of the History of Medicine)

“Impeccably researched. . . . [Rankin’s] engaging text introduces a number of remarkable medical women. Highly recommended.” (S. W. Moss Choice)

“Through deep and meticulous research into little-used archives, Panaceia’s Daughters gives insight into both macro-historical issues such as the development of new modes of knowledge-making in early modern Europe and micro-historical questions of lay perceptions of sickness and health. Most of all, it underscores the sometimes hidden but always central place of women in health care and healing in the early modern era, revealing the importance of ‘princess-practitioners’ and vividly bringing to life their networks of recipe and medicinal exchange. This book demonstrates that kitchen gardens, still rooms, recipes, and household arts should not be relegated to the margins but, rather, placed squarely within the history of the scientific revolution.” (Pamela H. Smith, Columbia University)

“Panaceia’s Daughters is a fascinating read. Meticulously researched and brimming with new insights, it tells the forgotten story of the early modern German noblewomen who worked as healers and experimented with newfangled medicines. Alisha Rankin reveals a hitherto invisible underworld of empirical and experimental science that flourished in the households of early modern Germany, and brings back to life the everyday world of the Renaissance courts. A model cultural history of science, Panaceia’s Daughters is an important contribution to our understanding of women’s roles in making scientific knowledge and is essential reading for anyone interested in gender history and the history of the Scientific Revolution. With this engrossing, pathbreaking work, Rankin takes her place among the leading historians of early modern science.” (William Eamon, New Mexico State University)

“With admirable archival skill and a remarkable ability to tease meaning out of seemingly straightforward sources, Alisha Rankin reconstructs the extensive medical activity and widely recognized authority of scores of German noblewomen and situates them at the nexus of medical expertise, charity, and patronage. This book not only challenges us to rethink our understanding of patronage and court culture in terms of gender but also reminds us of the many varieties of empiricism and experimentalism that flourished in the sixteenth century, long before they were articulated and institutionalized in scientific societies. Panaceia’s Daughters is a delight to read and will further establish early modern German courts as lively sites for the exploration of nature.” (Tara Nummedal, Brown University)

“This is a beautifully crafted, solid, and imaginative piece of historical research that brings new light on the role of women in early modern medicine and on their participation in the early modern culture of experimentation and empiricism. Alisha Rankin highlights the connection between the medieval tradition of experimenta (medical recipes) and the birth of early modern empiricist attitudes and practices, thus offering an important contribution to the history of early modern scientific culture.” (Gianna Pomata, Johns Hopkins University)
