Life Saver!

It's hard to get non-vegan family and friends to enjoy themselves at parties. Enter Party Vegan. This book is full of recipes from quick bites to full meals, all categorized by holiday, which helps make planning much easier. Along with the recipes are tips for how to estimate the amount of food to make, ideas to make planning easier and a party punch recipe that will have guests wondering just how much bubbly is hidden amongst all the deliciousness.

If you are interested in recipes to bring along to potlucks, or for Thanksgiving & Christmas parties, or if you are planning on throwing a party yourself and want to be a party animal without serving any at your party, do yourself a favor and add this book to your collection.

How does she come up with all of these recipes??

I believe this is my fourth Robin Robertson cookbook, and thus far, none have let me down. Party Vegan starts with a solid tips and information section to help plan your party. From there it moves into 25 different menu-themed chapters of recipes. Thus far I have trialed three of the recipes. The Mini Falafels (from the "Crowd Control" chapter in the Moroccan Station) had a spot on flavor and texture, and were perfect for a make-ahead appetizer. The Fingerling Potato Salad with Pan-Fried Arugula Pesto (from the "a Picnic Lunch" chapter) was so rich in flavor that no guest would ever miss the Parmesan. And, the Chai-Spiced Muffins (from the "Mother's Day Brunch" chapter) were perfect for an everyday treat with tea.

This is definitely a must have for entertaining any time of year.

I have found numerous ideas from this book, tried a number of them and turned out great! If your not wanting to go the way of "the old Vegan style cooking" but looking for something contemporary to modern living that non Vegans will enjoy too... this is a book for you!

For aspiring and working journalists, and others curious about the field, these edited talks--divided into categories like politics, people, sports, social issues, etc.--make an instructive collection. The New Yorker 's Mark Singer relates that he reads fiction to help him to develop his own voice. Freelancer Jennifer Allen stresses that a fair-minded editor is more valuable than "all the exposure in the world." Newsweek 's Melinda Beck maintains that editors sometimes only become aware of issues when their friends call them to their attention. Zinsser adds a thoughtful postscript to each chapter; for example, recounting how he gathered emotional content for his book American Places and advising reporters to "push the boundaries of your subject."

A Gutsy Girl with a Stolen Sword.

This is a fun tale about a girl who wants more than just childcare. She steals her brother's armor and runs off to become a hero. She lies, bluffs, and tricks herself into a job. This works for awhile then he finds herself in over her head. She is crafty and audacious and finally finds her own power inside. Her amiable brother makes an appearance as well.

My second grade student loved it

I wrote my student thought about this book "this story has a good adventure. This story is about a girl named Spark who stole her brother's armor and sword and how she saved the people and lied about being a strong warrior. She helped the people live!" This book kept him very entertained for an hour. Most excellent!

Und diese Erkenntnis beschränkte sich nicht nur auf das Öl und der damit verbundenen Mobilität. Umweltschützer und -aktivisten quasi die Grünen der ersten Stunde wurden vor diesen Ereignissen bezüglich ihrer Ideen, die vorhandenen Ressourcen sparsam zu verwenden, Recycling zu betreiben und generell Energie aus anderen Rohstoffen, denn aus Öl zu beziehen (und auch nicht aus der Atomenergie ), sprich mit den vorhandenen Mitteln nachhaltig umzugehen, bis dahin im besten Fall mit einem Lächeln belohnt. Dies änderte sich ab diesem Zeitpunkt drastisch. Ihre Vorschläge fanden in der Bevölkerung immer mehr Anklang und verloren auch den Charakter der Idee des linken Aktivisten . Es war chic geworden grün zu denken, nachhaltig zu denken, an die Bedürfnisse der zukünftigen Generationen zu denken.[...] Und schließlich entdeckten auch die Unternehmer und Wirtschaftstreibenden nachhaltiges Denken für sich und ihre Unternehmen. Ohne dabei einigen Individualisten und Idealisten der Gilde der Unternehmer ihre Vorreiterrolle streitig machen, oder gar ihren guten Willen in Frage stellen zu wollen, erkannte man, dass damit wirtschaftlich gesehen auf mehreren Ebenen Geld entweder einzusparen oder zu verdienen war. Beispielsweise wurde einerseits die Neuanschaffung ökonomisch und ökologisch sparsamer arbeitender Maschinen seitens der Regierungen finanziell unterstützt und etwa durch günstige Kredite verstärkt schmackhaft gemacht.

In Poetics of the Incarnation, Cristina Maria Cervone examines the work of fourteenth-century writers who, rather than approaching the mystery of the Incarnation through affective identification with the Passion, elected to ponder the intellectual implications of the Incarnation in poetical and rhetorical forms. Cervone argues that a poetics of the Incarnation becomes the grounds for working through the philosophical and theological implications of language, at a point in time when Middle English was emerging as a legitimate, if contested, medium for theological expression.

In brief lyrics and complex narratives, late medieval English writers including William Langland, Julian of Norwich, Walter Hilton, and the anonymous author of the Charters of Christ took the relationship between God and humanity as a jumping-off point for their meditations on the nature of language and thought, the elision between the concrete and the abstract, the complex relationship between acting and being, the work done by poetry itself in and through time, and the meaning latent within poetical forms. Where Passion-devoted writing would focus on the vulnerability and suffering of the fleshly body, these texts took imaginative leaps, such as when they depict the body of Christ as a lily or the written word. Their Incarnational poetics repeatedly call attention to the fact that, in theology as in poetics, form matters.

For anyone seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the methods of presentation by authors revealing the nature of the spiritual in relation to the body, Cervone's work is crucial, and must be included. Her use of literary and language theory, art history, cognitive science, and history is thorough, revealing the breadth of her scholarship. Elaborating on selections from the work of over 200 scholars and theologians, Cervone sets forth the phrenic design of Incarnation as intellection which then proceeds toward the poetic and imaginative. Cervone shows how language is the vehicle which translates the spiritual to the bodily, and in a way that is both astute and gracious, scholarly yet approachable. Cervone writes, "...the Incarnation is the pivot point around which thought and form coalesce" (Cervone 208). It is clear that this work will serve to guide the future of any work in Middle English poetics, mysticism, and theology.

About the Author

Andy McCrea has worked as a power engineer and manager within the energy industry in Northern Ireland for over thirty years.  Over the last fifteen years, his work has focused on the environmental side of the industry.  Since 2003, he has been the Director of Action Renewables, a government-funded private company, established to promote the rapid development and uptake of renewable energy.  Dr McCrea is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Environmentalist and a Fellow of the Energy Institute, and in 2004 he was awarded an MBE for services to the electricity industry.

Good bye boring power point presentations

"Building Impressive Presentations with impress.js" by Rakhitha Nimesh Ratnayake is a good book that will get a beginner with the impress.js framework up and running quickly.

The book is a quick read at 125 pages (including front matter and index). The author chose to not put all of the code in the book for the solutions he presented, so it means that you will have to get the download to follow along and run the presentations in the way he meant for them.

Each of the chapters were well written and easy to follow along with. However towards the end it seemed that I found myself thinking that what I was reading was very similar to previous text. I'm not stating that the author was repeating himself, but that once you get the hang of impress.js, the different ways the book presents things are similar in nature.

I definitely learned how to use impress.js by reading the book, but if you know anything about impress.js this might not be that helpful to you.

Thorough, Easy to read understanding of a complex plugin.

When I first came across Impress.js the plugin, I thought to myself that I now have to get my hands dirty understanding the gritty details of the code. After about 2 whole days of tinkering around I still lacked the ability to really run with it. I later found this book and been using it to help build a sister plugin for Wordpress. It's been my guide to making the most of Impress and streamlined my build process. Definitely recommend this to somebody ready to get dirty with impress but doesn't want to spend days getting familiar with it. You'll be rocking on it minutes.

Engaging and inspiring - a great introduction

"Building Impressive Presentations with impress.js" provides a great introduction to this new and powerful Javascript library. It includes comprehensive demos covering basics such as rotation, translation and scale, to more advanced topics such as creating website components and even whole websites using impress.js.

The book isn't without issue - I found the sentence structure and grammar to be slightly off at times, occasionally resulting in my reading a sentence more than once to get the intended meaning, and at times I felt that the author was not sure of his target demographic - chapter 3, "Delving into the Core of impress.js", goes into the core library code in detail, but is surrounded by explanations of more basic concepts such as the z-axis in the browser and how to find key-codes for interpreting key-presses. However in general the book is well written and these minor issues did not detract from my enjoyment of the book or interest in the topic. I did feel however that the example source code provided did not teach the techniques as well as it could have due to being provided in a "completed" state. I would recommend that anyone reading the book and looking to work alongside it try to write the code into a blank page, perhaps comparing your code with the author's when the chapter is complete.

The closing chapters - where the author first develops a "carousel" style content-slider, and then proceeds to develop and entire single page website in impress.js - were particularly interesting and inspiring, and the included discussion on the pros and cons of this approach in regard to browser and device compatibility was a useful aside.

All-in-all a good read and a great way to get to know a library which I am sure will become more and more popular in the coming months and years.
