Virginia during the Civil War.
The American Civil War caused any number of problems, besides battle, to the citizens of Virginia. Parts of the state were anti-slavery, other parts, die-hard Confederates, and it's this conflict that is the backbone of this novel.
Willa and Surry have grown up near each other, but they might as well be miles apart. Willa's family owns a small farm, and Surry is the daughter of slaves at a large plantation nearby. They become friends as children, and that friendship will survive and be tested as war clouds form over their homeland. Also nearby is Levi Clement, a hyoung Quaker who is steadfast in his belief of non-violence and that slavery is evil. He is bethrothed to Comfort Clarke, but as war erupts in his state, the life he had planned is quickly changing.
Willa has learned that despite her hatred of slavery, defending Virginia is more important. When her brothers march off to war, she runs away shortly afterwards and disguises herself as a boy to join the Confederate Army. Her experiences rae not what she expected, but she will not let the fact that she is a woman stop her from protecting her beliefs. Meanwhile, Surry and her siblings are left to try and escape the tyranny and attempt to use the Underground Railroad to move north to freedome. All the while each young woman prays for the safety of the other.
Levi's beliefs are stretched to the limit as war escalates and the southern army takes over his father's mill, and soon the very church where they worship. When he spies a young soldier at the church, he's sure it is a woman, but what would a woman be doing at war?

This historical romance, HEARTS DIVIDED (book one in The Quaker and the Confederate duet) would not have been possible without all of the historians, novelists, Civil War buffs, and internet academics, who've so ably and meticulously researched, then set pen to paper, chronicling this turbulent time in our nation's history. Beyond these resources, I had the opportunity to visit and collect invaluable archival data from rich-in-history Virginia and West Virginia bookshops and historical museums. Born and raised in Virginia, I learned early-on that the ground I trod was hallowed, the battle cries across fields such as Manassas, the Wilderness, Chancellorsville, and Harper's Ferry...still audible, if one stops to listen. My great-great-grandfathers, James Gregg and John Shackelford, fought in the war.
Like most, I've accrued a general degree of knowledge about the Civil War, but the writing of this historical romance taught me so much more. I hope to share with you, in this upcoming, two-book Civil War romantic series, what I've learned about women-soldiers masquerading as Confederates and as Yankees, the role of African Americans fighting for their cause, the treacherous plight of fugitive slaves, and the key role of the Quakers and their rich tradition in Virginia history.
On my first visit to Waterford in Loudoun County, Virginia, I felt a masterful hand take up mine the moment I began to wander the cobbled streets, and my Quaker hero was born in my head and heart. It only took one turn of the research page, reading about women soldiers in the Civil War, for my heroine to come to life and don her Confederate uniform. My research cried out for a second hero and heroine, both African Americans, to tell their love story, commanding equal consideration for their rightful place in Virginia history.

I bought the book on tape and thought it was great. The story line and take on history was very interesting and had me captivated from the start. I would recommed this book to most who are interseted in this timeframe and enjoy a good romance!!

This book had promise. I was interested in the book since it is set in my native Virginia. However, had I not known better, I would have thought it was written for a 12 year old to read. The writing is very juvenile. There is a lack of compound sentences and it has grammatical errors. The same thought is repeated 4-5 times in the same paragraph. It was as though the author had a quota of words she had to fulfill and like a kid was repeating the same thought in a variety of ways. This tends to make the book very boring. Don't bother to read it.
