This is a revision and an updating of the first edition, published in 2000. Presidents from Washington to Obama (not included are William Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield because of very short terms) are rated in five categories: Foreign Relations, Domestic Programs, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations, Leadership and Decision Making, and Presidential Comportment.
Each president is evaluated on his effectiveness in each area and a final analysis is provided for the scores combined. The presidents are then ranked overall. The most overrated and underrated chief executives are identified. Each entry includes biographical and political information, as well as an analysis of their overall behavior and status.

Challenging and Controversial New Ranking of Presidents

Published in June 2012, this study represents the most recent attempt by scholars to rank U.S. Presidents by actual performance and includes the recent presidencies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama while excluding the one month presidency of William Henry Harrison and the six months of James A. Garfield. The authors established positive and negative criteria for each of several areas of performance and assigned positive and negative point totals for each. The assessments of each category and the overall numerical tallies that result yielded some intriguing outcomes. While the most commonly acknowledged "greatest presidents" cited in past assessments (Lincoln, Washington and F.D. Roosevelt) continued to score well under Professor Faber's scheme, some presidents who had been described as "failures" (Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan and Martin Van Buren) scored surprisingly well. Ranking at the very bottom (41st among the 41 presidents rated) in both domestic and foreign policy, and next to last (40th above only Grant) in overall accomplishments is George W. Bush. Ronald Reagan is also down in the rankings below the likes of Tyler and Harding. Barack Obama generally ranks in the upper third (based on 3+ years in the White House) while Bill Clinton is in the middle ranges. - Although I happen to agree that the George W. Bush presidency was the single most destructive in American history, I can understand how this book may be open to criticism by scholars who fail to fully accept some of the criteria and methodology offered.

Liberally Biased Nonsense

I bought this book after reading the first few pages. It promised a very thorough balanced rating of all the presidents with 100 different scores added up. Unfortunately, I was wishing I could get my money back after reading more. Any book that rates Ronald Reagan as the worst Domestic Issues President is just not worth the paper its printed on. Franklin Roosevelt is rated best on Domestic Issues even though the book admits that his New Deal policies did not get us out of the Great Depression. Ronald Reagans economic policies DID get us out of the economic recession and hyperinflation caused by Jimmy Carter. So Reagan's policies worked, Roosevelts didn't (by the author's own admission), yet Roosevelt is ranked highest and Reagan the lowest.
Basically, the author hates Republicans. Coolidge and Reagan are both among the lowest Presidents even though they both presided over two of the best economic times which their policies helped to bring about. Meanwhile the author says that Jimmy Carter is "underrated", even though his policies were a disaster in every way imaginable. And George W. Bush is rated among the lowest even though his terrific leadership during 9/11 helped the country heal, and he kept the country safe for the remainder of his term. Oh, and by the way, most Democrats voted to go into Iraq, so don't just lay the blame on him.
I am critical of Kenneth C. Davis's book on the Presidents, but it is much more balanced than this. Davis acknowledges that Reagan was a great President and Carter was a failure. This book is just way too biased toward liberal Democrats. Save your money.
