Lots of problems with this book, avoid if you have a Pontiac Motor

If it wasn't for the section on reupholstery, this book would be useless for a Firebird/Trans Am running a Pontiac motor.
This book is essentially a book about specific brands getting exposure, there's not much in here about actual performance techniques.
There are a lot of problems with this book. I'll hit a few in my review. This is not an exclusive list as I am sure there are more problems and/or things not mentioned that are important.
Under "Engine Performance" chapter, under the section "Small block verses Big Block", the author is only really discussing Chevrolet blocks. If you know anything about Pontiac, there's only one block size for a Pontiac. More importantly, the second paragraph implies that a Pontiac 350 has the same performance options and products as a Chevy 350. That is not true, a Pontiac 350 is part of the Pontiac engine family which includes the 400 and 455. You can get plenty of performance parts for Pontiac engines, but they are not what is discussed in this book. If you're building a Pontiac 350 or any other Pontiac for that matter, do not reference this book.
Under chapter "Intake Manifolds and Carburetion", the author says that Quadrajets before 1975 are good performance carburetors and ones after 1975 are bad (emissions) carburetors. I'm no carburetor expert, but I know enough about the Quadrajet to know that so long as it's pre-dates the 1980's computer controlled versions, what matters is how the Quadrajet is built for the application. You can modify a Quadrajet that came on a 1979 Pontiac 400, replace jets and metering rods for example, and get great performance. Also, you can take a 1973 quadrajet from a Pontiac 455 and use it on a Chevy 350 and have poor performance. The specific Quadrajet and how it is built is what matters, not the year.
Chapter "Exhaust System", if you are running a Pontiac, headers can be a real headache to install, you need to shop for headers specifically for the Firebird, otherwise you will go crazy trying to get them to fit. Alternatively, the Ram Air cast manifolds are popular alternatives to headers when running a Pontiac motor.
Chassis Upgrades section on Frame Connectors, they show the most time consuming frame connectors to install. It's a great frame connector, but many of us don't want to cut up our floor, which requires more than just what is in this book, but also requires custom carpeting too. In addition, the front frame body bushings need to be changed to solid bushings, an importunate detail left out of this book. Pro Touring F-Body brand frame connectors and many other brands will include in their instructions the requirement for the solid body bushings.
How this book covers suspension improvements without discussing in any depth stabilizer bars (sway bars), types of springs and shocks is beyond me.
Rear drum to rear disc brake conversion is missing some seriously important steps. If you convert from rear drum to rear disc, you need to upgrade the brake booster as well as the proportioning valve. You have to switch this otherwise you could seriously harm yourself or others if the rear brakes lock up.
Conclusion:
There are some good topics covered in this book, lots of specific products mentioned as well. Just keep an open mind that the products mentioned are "examples", there are many other brands of all of the parts mentioned like the brake parts from Wilwood, Summit/Jegs, or The Right Stuff Detailing, all work just as well or better depending on your preference. If you're going the Pontiac motor route, most of the meat of this book does not apply. I would not recommend this book to anyone planning on installing a Pontiac motor.
If you're still looking for a resource to help you add real-world performance to your Firebird/Trans Am (or even Camaro), the book to find is called "Supertuning Your Firebird Trans-Am", it is way out of print but it has real information on suspension tuning, sway bars, springs, shocks, engine performance tips, etc... It references work Herb Adams did as well as others. That's what I was expecting this book to be like.

Good "How To" Book

In that I own a Pontiac, I read with great interest this performance projects book on the Camaro and Firebird, by Jeff Tann. It's apparent that Mr. Tann really knows his stuff. After a quick introduction and overview of the two cars, he gets right into the technical parts of the book. By breaking up the subject matter into 17 chapters, it is easy to read and to understand. All of the photos are in color and are large enough to see what is being done.
With both of these cars coming off the GM assembly line a lot of the things Mr. Tann covers really applies to both vehicles, with some minor differences. Of course the Pontiac featured different engines and engine sizes throughout these years. However, the speed equipment being offered is available for both engines and the overhaul and engine build is pretty much the same.
As far as the Rochester Quadrajet carb is concerned I have to agree with Mr. Tann. He states that, "The Q-jet carbs from 1975 and on are set up to meet emissions standards and are essentially detuned, and therefore not your best choice when building a high-performance engine." Carbs are designed for different applications, and some work better than others. When we were building my engine we went with a Demon, because I liked the performance.
This book starts with the basics and goes all the way through building, increasing performance, engine swaps and sheet metal modifications and restoration. I really liked the interior restoration and instrument installation section. This was new material and done very well, with plenty of in-depth photos.
It's difficult to be all things to all people when you have only so much space or so many pages to pack it all in. This very detailed book covers a lot of ground in 178-pages and it is well written. The "how to" parts are carefully explained so that anyone can follow through and do their own work in their garage. A lot of thought and research has gone into this book, and I found it helpful and a good reference to have on the workbench.

I was disappointed in this book mostly b/c it only recommends aftermarket ...

I've bought several books as I'm fixing up not restoring a '78 T/A. I was disappointed in this book mostly b/c it only recommends aftermarket parts that you can buy.
The one part I was really interested in was the rear disc brake section and its barely covered and doesn't mention anything about using brakes from another later model car. I think I bought every current SA design book and none of them mention using junkyard parts to do cool upgrades.
There is some information about power windows, but again the detail are scarce and its all about purchasing a product. I think the companies mentioned in the book paid for it to be made because it just doesn't make sense why someone who loves cars would always promote buying something aftermarket to improve the car and never look to improvise.
I would recommend this book only to confirm information you've read on the internet but you can really pass this one by.
If you aren't looking to drop $5K-$15K in additional parts there's not much in this book.
