About the Author
Richard Ben Cramer (1950-2013) won the Pulitzer Prize for Middle East reporting in 1979. His journalism has appeared in Time, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, and Rolling Stone. He is the author of How Israel Lost: The Four Questions and the classic of modern American politics What It Takes: The Way to the White House.

Well written and entertaining

George H. W. Bush is a thoroughly decent man. Reading anything about him over the years has always interested in me, he has deep convictions, is a loving father and grandfather, has a wonderful marriage, and apart from political partisianship, no one can say an unkind word about him. Even his detractors consider him a good man, and everyone who has ever known him can tell you he is a loyal friend. I really enjoyed Ben Cramer's portrait of George H. W. Bush, and all the behind the scenes political fodder from which Bush was always removed, I don't think he's done anything underhanded in his life. Also very interesting discussion of his upbringing, he had wonderful parents. Anyone interested in reading about Bush's service as a pilot in WWII should read "Flyboys" by James Bradley--the reader will be amazed at the courage and impact his war service had on him the rest of his life--and no one will be able to read "Flyboys" without coming away with profound respect for George H. W. Bush.

This book was a delight to read! It is well written and full of great insights into George H W Bush's life. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of this fine family!

Richard Ben Cramer has written the definitive George Bush biography. Exhaustive research, and incredible writing ability make this a joy to read. The larger story it is excerpted from, WHAT IT TAKES, includes equally fascinating studies of Joseph Biden, Gary Hart, Bob Dole, Richard Gephardt, Mike Dukakis, and others. (Don't believe Bob Dole or Dukakis could be fascinating? Neither did I). As everything here is contained in WHAT IT TAKES, I would recommend that book firs -you get the others and even more interesting, you see Bush reacting to the others as the massive tome slowly climaxes during the 1988 Presidential election.
