Escaping the Citadel with her best friend Nell and new friend Charlie, Eliza sets off to rescue her father. They seek help from the Triumvirate, an uneasy alliance of ultimate power – the Oracle, the King of the Faeries, and Swarn, the witch who delivered Eliza as a baby. They try to stop her, but she is determined. She knows she’s connected to the Xia Sorceress somehow.
What awaits Eliza in the Arctic is more horrible than she could have imagined. Abandoned by the Mancers and the Triumvirate, she must rely on her friends and her own wits and common sense to succeed in her quest.
Shade and Sorceress is Catherine Egan’s first published novel. Her short fiction has appeared in several publications in the USA and Canada. Catherine currently resides in Princeton, NJ.

Loved this from start to finish + would definitely recommend it for boys and girls who love Harry Potter/Hunger Games/Golden Compass -- kids who want the books they read to be imaginative and fun.
The main character, Eliza, is the last of a long line of powerful sorceresses whose job it is to protect the world of Di Shang. But Eliza has never met her mother, and even though she's being trained by powerful magical beings called Mancers, her magic flat-out doesn't work -- so when trouble starts, she has to rely on her own wits, her friends, and her courage.
This book has great characters -- the main character is a strong, smart girl who grew up dark-skinned in a light-skinned village, and she has to struggle for everything she gets. By the end of the book, you're really rooting for her. The magic of the book is also really creative and fun -- shapeshifters, foot dragons, illusory cities, fairy-blood amulets -- it gives you the feeling of sinking into another world.
This is the first book in a three-book series. I'll definitely be sending these out to my nieces and nephews for many Christmases to come.

Shade and Sorceress; The last day of TianDi

I thought I would have a problem with this book, since I outgrew Sorceresses a long time ago. Guess what, I couldn't put it down Catherine Egan has a story telling quality, which kept me glued page after page and I was sorry when ended. Highly recommended to teenagers and grandparents and anybody in between. Wonderful read.
Looking forward to the next sequel and I am very happy that it comes in Kindle format.

Rich and complex worldbuilding

Rich and complex worldbuilding, with unexpected twists, in this epic fantasy story. I honestly don't know why this book (or the entire series) hasn't gotten more notice--fans of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series will find much to like in these pages. Bonus points for a POC character and cover!
