The Lone Star Ranger, by Zane Grey

The premier chronicler of the American West, legendary storyteller Zane Grey has captivated millions of readers with his timeless adventures of life, death, gunfire, and justice. This is the Old West in all its glory and grandeur. Forged in blood. Enflamed by passion. Emblazoned with bullets. . .

In the law of the gun, a man must shoot his way to innocence. At least that's how Captain McKelly of the Texas Rangers puts it to Buck Duane. On the run for killing a man to save his own skin, Duane must now infiltrate the deadly Chelsedine gang. These ruthless rustlers are running amok in Texas and it's going to take a matchless gunfighter to stop their rampage. With the legendary Rangers providing firepower, Duane has more than a fighting chance. Or so he thinks. When he uncovers a secret that could destroy them all, the bullet storm is biblical--and a legend rises out of the dust.

"Zane Grey epitomized the mythical West that should have been." --True West

"Grey was a champion of the American wilderness and the men and women who tamed the Old West."--Booklist

A great adventure yarn
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
Practically born with a gun in his hand, it was inevitable that Buck Duane would end up a wanted man. But, even if not a peaceful man, Duane is an honorable one. And now, there is a highly respected Texas Ranger captain on his heels, and this Captain McNally wants a personal meeting with him. It's been a long and hard life for Buck Duane, and he is no fool, not for the law and not for the outlaws.

Zane Grey (1872-1939) was one of the giants of the Western genre, and this was his fourteenth novel published - by this time he was really hitting his stride. The book itself falls naturally into two parts, almost like two novellas published together. As you would expect with Zane Grey, the main character is tough and unrelenting, and the action is great.

So, if you like a good Western, then you will like this book. It's good, solid Zane Grey - which means that it's a great adventure yarn that will keep you turning the pages.

Buck Duane, Lone Star Ranger
By Charles Wheeler
I have to congratulate Pinnacle Books for bringing out this Mass-Market Paperback in the face of the dwindling mass-market paperback market. This is the fifth Zane Grey title they have published in the last couple of years, and in my opinion, I believe there is still a broad-based audience for his work, so I wish someone would keep printing his novels in this format for the general public to purchase in hopes of reaching a younger generation. It has been twenty years since a major publishing house has made a concentrated effort bof publishing two or three novels a month of Zane Grey in an attempt to print all of his western novels; a collection of about 65 works. So, at two a month it would take almost three years to complete. As to "The Lone Star Ranger" itself: Despite having made the best seller list when it was published, and being considered one of Zane Grey's best works, I cannot appraise it that high. For one thing, this novel was actually the merging of two novels by Zane Grey's publisher at the time, Harpers. The front half is from a book titled, The Last of the Duanes, and the second half is from a book called, Rangers of the Lone Star. These two novels have been published as stand alone books in the last 20 years, and are far superior books. They also answer many unanswered questions the reader of The Lone Star Ranger will find themselves asking themselves as the book progresses. The premise of this work is a masterful idea: Does Buck Duane come by his deadly urge to kill because of his heritage, or does his environment cause him to be this way? Zane Grey was a believer is some of what Charles Darwin professed, and popularized the phrase, "survival of the fittest" in many of his books. This edition is a welcome site on the bookshelves in the stores. I hope there will be many more.

I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this book then because there wasn't much action
By Francisco Manallo
I've read some Zane Greys when I was a young boy. I didn't realize then how detailed his writings were until I read this book. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this book then because there wasn't much action. As a young boy I probably enjoyed more gunfights won by the hero. In this book as a 68 yr. old reader I liked the detailed descriptions of the desert wilderness and the plausible hardships a 'lone wolf' would have gone through as a fugitive.
