Amazing, Inspirational, Delicious!

Joy is amazing. I love following her on facebook, her tips and recipes are always so helpful and insightful.
Anyway, I read the book tonight, while I ran at the Y. I expected it to be good, based on Joy and her approach to health and wellness, but I honestly did not expect it to blow me away like it did.
So my preface is that lately it seems like weight loss success stories that I have read in media (People's Half Their Size issue this year, for example) have focused on people who have used approaches to weight loss that I am really not a fan of. I don't find them to be realistically sustainable or helpful in the long term (there is a reason why 80% of people that lose 30lbs or more gain it back, and only 20% of people who lose 30lbs or more keep it off more than a year) and that is b/c they do not achieve their weight loss with methods that can be sustained long term.
So to me, featuring people in People magazine or other magazines etc who have had gastric bypass (ONLY effective if you change your habits and lifestyle...which if you do that in the first place, you will not need surgery...if you don't change, you will maybe lose an initial amount of weight, but you will stall, or gain it back, it's not magic), or use extreme fad diets (cutting out a macronutrient completely like carbs, or going to extreme measures like HCG or supplements etc) is not inspiring. It is not motivational. It is not helpful. All it says to me is "let me be suckered in by some company trying to make money off my 48th desperate attempt to lose weight". Not. A. Fan.
This book though...is freaking AMAZING because EVERY SINGLE PERSON in this book lost over 100lbs (and some 200-300lbs, OMFG!) 30 people, with absolutely NOTHING more than "Eat Less, Move More". Good old-fashioned, change what/how you eat and MOVE YOUR BODY.
For everyone in the book, this looks different. Why? B/c there really is, unfortunately, no magic answer. Depending on the cause of your obesity (common thread in all of the stories in the book, emotional eating started at a young age...), depending on what works for you for the long term, what exercise you connect with-it's not a formulated do this and lose 100lbs.
Joy presents some great tips for success, that ARE a common theme running through all of the stories, and sound foundational principles for implementing a lifestyle change that will last for the rest of your life.
She uses their favorite healthy recipes to make up a great 3 week meal plan, that my husband and I started 2 weeks ago, and I have lost 5lbs and he has lost 8lbs already!
These stories are all real people-of all ages, from 20s all the way to 60s, who lose weight by changing what they ate, not depriving themselves, not going to extremes, not even Biggest Loser-ing it (ie living in the gym). Instead, they all made small changes that slowly added up to amazing results that they can sustain forever.
I am so ridiculously inspired by reading in-depth the stories from the Joy Fit Club members, and I know you all will be too-whether you have only a few pounds to lose, or have a long road to travel like they did. Or even if you just want some new healthy amazing recipes!
I love that everyone is represented here-people that have changed themselves from all walks of life-so there are NO excuses. NONE. College students, wives, husbands, grandmas, grandpas, busy people that worked long days as doctors to stay at home mamas trying to manage little ones and a house and husband and everything in between-NO EXCUSES. They all did it. They all GOT IT DONE, because one day they made up their minds, for whatever reason, and figured out what they had to do, to become the person they'd always wanted to be. Nothing extreme. Nothing fad. No surgery (except excess skin surgery for some after the fact). No living in the gym for 20 hours a day. No 800 calorie diets.
I love it. I love the reality, the inspiration, the motivation that this book brings. If 30 people from all walks of life, gender, socio-economic statuses, etc, can do it-So you can you! There are no excuses, this book showcases 30 people with all the excuses in the world, who one day decided they were tired of they excuses, and they shut up and ate less and moved more.
So check out this book, again, esp if you are someone who has asked "what is their secret?"-and there have been countless that ask! There is no secret-but this book will really motivate, inspire and give some great foundational tools for setting yourself up for lifestyle change success for the long-term! And the food is easy to make and really delicious-our kids LOVE it!

Very Inspirational but Recipes are Mixed Bag

Any naysayer who claims that "dieting doesn't work" should read the success stories in this book. These are people who lost 100, 200, even 300 lbs. and have kept the weight off. I personally never had hundreds of pounds to lose, but I was overweight and lost 20% of my bodyweight back in 2002. For the most part, I have managed to keep it off since then with the exception of a setback in 2010 due to some personal issues. However, I was able to work through those and take the pounds off again. Maintaining a significant weight loss long-term *IS* possible, and it's inspiring to see the dramatic transformations of those Joy has profiled in her new book.
The testimonials are the best part of "The Joy Fit Club". However, as I was using the cookbook, I began to be really annoyed by the editorial decision to intersperse the profiles in with the recipes rather than having them all in one section up front.
The recipes themselves are a mixed bag. Many of them are not really recipes at all but rather just suggestions for combining convenience foods (e.g. mixing canned black beans into a box of brownie mix). Maybe that's reflective of how lazy many Americans have become these days, but I love to cook (a big part of the reason I became overweight in the first place). I want real recipes in my cookbook and I don't think that's too much to ask.
Successes:
-Curried Lentils & Veggies (pg. 59) This is definitely going into my regular rotation as it was super-tasty.
-Mustard Dill Salmon en Papillote (pg. 142) Really tasty but to be nit-picky the name should read "in foil" rather than "en papillote" because it was not cooked in parchment paper.
-Decadent Chocolate Mousse with Berries (pg. 278) An amazingly delicious indulgence but as it has 240 kcal, 26 g sugar, and 10 g fat per measly 1/2 cup serving it is definitely something that falls into the category of special occasion treat.
Partial Successes:
-Corn, Avocado, and Tomato Salad (pg. 44). The first day it was okay but lacked the "wow" factor. The second day it was tastier but had turned a very unappetizing color.
-Quinoa and Chickpea Salad (pg. 153). This was okay but given how much I like the various ingredients like chickpeas, quinoa, broccoli, lemon, and garlic, I was disappointed that it wasn't better.
-Turkey & Veggie Stew (pg. 108). This recipe has an "everything but the kitchen sink" feel to it. It was okay but I felt it would've been better had it had fewer ingredients. For example, was it necessary to include rice AND barley AND potatoes? That's a lot of carbs for one dish. I would've picked ONE of those carbs and left the rest out.
-Wild Salmon Salad with Chickpeas (pg. 218). This was very bland as written. I added a bit of garlic, Italian seasoning mix, and black pepper and then it was good.
Failures:
-Triple Berry Muffins (pg. 80). This recipe may be low fat and made with whole grains but it had TONS of sugar. I found the muffins far too sweet, my 9 y.o. found them too squishy, the 6 y.o. thought they were just okay, and only the 3 y.o. liked them.
-Protein Pancake with Strawberries (pg. 227). Yuck. My kids refused to eat more than one bite, and I couldn't blame them. They like the oatmeal pancakes from The South Beach Diet Cookbook: More than 200 Delicious Recipes That Fit the Nation's Top Diet and the Oat Bran Galette from The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever so it's not that they aren't used to eating whole grain oat pancakes. But this version was just plain nasty.
Bottom line: I will be adding this cookbook to my regular rotation.

Inspirational book

As someone who struggles with her weight, I enjoy watching Joy Bauer's "Joy Fit Club" segments on the Today Show. In fact, that is where I heard about this book. The members of Joy's Fit Club have lost 100 pounds or more. I only have a fraction of that to lose, but the stories shared and the advice given are still relevant to me. The book profiles 30 members of Joy's club, and goes into more detail than what is shared on the Today Show. I love their success stories! It certainly makes me think that if these ordinary, everyday people can lose 100 pounds or more, I should be able to lose a few pounds myself.
The book discusses 8 important rules that you need to succeed. Some examples: You need to "get your head in the game;" you need to be ready to make a full-time commitment - for the rest of your life, not just until you lose 10 pounds or whatever. You need to exercise daily. Start out simple and build up from there. You need to recognize and avoid your trigger foods. (I don't know how many times I have purchased a bag of chocolates or potato chips, convinced that I'll eat them in moderation when I know deep inside that I really can't.) Also, you need to forgive your slip-ups. You need to get away from the "Well, I blew it today, that's it until I restart my diet next Monday" mentality (also a problem for me).
In addition, the book contains a variety of healthy recipes, including main entrees, soups, breads, desserts, etc. The nutrition information (calories, fat, fiber, carbohydrates, etc.) of each is listed. This will be especially helpful to me, since a member of my family was recently diagnosed with diabetes and needs to track his carbohydrate intake.
I find the book very inspirational, and look forward to using the advice and recipes ... and hopefully, losing my unwanted pounds.
