In vignettes so focused they often seem like actual memories, McNamer (Rima in the Weeds) creates a family saga that strikingly evokes time's passage. The reader's first impression of Amelia Malone, circa 1973, is that she's a pathetic and feeble old woman who spends hours putting on makeup. Her octogenarian brother Jerry is introduced with even less ado. Subsequent chapters detail these siblings' more vibrant years: in the 1910s, Amelia aspires to be a chanteuse in Manhattan, where failed contracts and talented competition leave her dispirited. Jerry survives droughts and winters as a homesteader in Montana, then has minor success as an oil prospector. As Amelia leaves New York to visit him, the novel draws nearer its climax—a 1923 prizefight between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons that is intended to bring prosperity to the small Montana town's economy. A flash-forward to the 50-year anniversary of the fight, and a celebration at which "old-timers" like Jerry and Amelia are patronizingly honored, offers a powerful commentary on how that hope was dashed. While there's certainly occasion for bitterness in Amelia and Jerry's decline, it is tempered by the seamless beauty and clarity of the narrative and the universality of the characters' struggles against encroaching infirmity.

Amelia Malone, a singer hampered by limited talent and stubborn innocence, settles for a career as a local music teacher. Jerome ineffectually seeks wealth in farming, real estate ventures, and oil speculation. Hard-drinking, womanizing Carlton caroms from one money-making scheme to another without lasting success. This absorbing portrait of the failed American Dream leaves readers saddened but not hopeless and suggests that more insight can be gained from the evocative particulars of daily life than from great occurrences. The author achieves both immediacy and distance by combining imagined with real events and by shifting smoothly between past and present tenses. The style, which blends lyricism with gritty realism, is different from that of McNamer's Rima in the Weeds ( LJ 1/91) but satisfies as fully. For all fiction collections. Here McNamer has traveled back in time to the era of Prohibition and Montana's modest oil boom. Jerry Malone heads west as a young man, seeking land, adventure, and freedom. Dreamy and isolated, Daisy Lou acquires an entire repertoire of strangely ethereal attitudes and gestures that make her both ridiculous and admirable. She eventually heads east and braves the venality of New York City until her strong instinct for survival inspires her to seek the protection of her brother in Shelby, Montana. McNamer switches back and forth between Daisy Lou's heart-tugging failures in New York and Jerry's nearly fatal battle with climatic extremes and the greed of land speculators. After a series of misadventures—all told with McNamer's wonderfully wry humor, eye for telling detail, and lyrical laconism—the two siblings are reunited at Shelby's finest moment: the 1923 heavyweight boxing championship between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons. One Sweet Quarrel is a complex package. In narrative style, it has the enigmatic allure of an old photo-album, but in tone, it swings from the mellifluousness of old-fashioned love songs to the jarring belligerence of fistfights and calculated betrayals. lovely descriptions

This author writes beautiful descriptions -- over and over. There are many and while each one is fine, they just go on and on. So much that I found the plot, the drama, the tension weakened. Finally, there is no real conclusion to my way of reading. It is much like a long, very long, "slice of life" novel. "This is the way it was" is the theme. I grew tired of plowing ahead, was glad to be finished, but disappointed in the resolutions of the conflicts, such as they were. But if you like wonderful use of words, you will enjoy every page!

An uninteresting family saga

You can read my title in either of two ways and be right. This novel is an uninteresting saga about a family, and it's also a saga about an uninteresting family. Or you can go whole hog and see it completely as an uninteresting saga about an uninteresting family.
There's no denying that this book apparantly entertains some readers. I'm not one of them.
The truth is that I basically haven't been excited by any of Nancy's rediscoveries. I guess she just has radically different tastes in books than I do. So if you've enjoyed her other recommendations, there's a pretty good chance you'll go for this one. (and then again, maybe not)
