Ford's 351 Cleveland was designed to be a 'mid-sized' V-8 engine, and was developed for higher performance use upon its launch in late 1969 for the 1970 models. This unique design proved itself under the hood of Ford's Mustang, among other high performance cars. The Cleveland engine addressed the major shortcoming of the Windsor engines that preceded it, namely cylinder head air flow. The Windsor engines just couldn't be built at the time to compete effectively with the strongest GM and Mopar small blocks offerings, and the Cleveland engine was the answer to that problem. Unfortunately, the Cleveland engine was introduced at the end of Detroit's muscle car era, and the engine, in pure Cleveland form, was very short lived. It did continue on as a low compression passenger car and truck engine in the form of the 351M and 400M, which in their day, offered little in the way of excitement. Renewed enthusiasm in this engine has spawned an influx of top-quality new components that make building or modifying these engines affordable.
This new book reviews the history and variations of the 351 Cleveland and Ford's related engines, the 351M and 400M. Overall, the book is decent.

A brief background of the 351 Cleveland engine is given.
Nice section on current cylinder head offerings. Ditto on aftermarket cylinder blocks.
Would have been more informative had complete airflow numbers for individual make of heads been published. Manufacturer's websites provide this information, but having it available from one source would have been a plus.
Most airflow numbers noted are for race builds (airflow @ .700" - .800" valve lift)
There are some errors in specifications; some of which are typos (transposed numbers), but others are just erroneous.
"How to Build for Max Performance". Street or race performance?
Detail is limited on both sides. Performance builds are interesting; but information tends to whet ones appetite and leave you wanting more.
A few tips here and there that would benefit a performance build. Always welcome.
Nice photography work. Good source guide section with links at end of book.
On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 6.5. Would purchase again even knowing content.

It has a lot of good information about factory and aftermarket components

I'm not an engine builder but I've owned a 351c for 20 years. I feel this book is more high level than technical. It has a lot of good information about factory and aftermarket components. It covers a lot of the aftermarket parts that are available with specs and comparisons. It touches a lot of things to consider during a Cleveland build as far as part selection goes. If you're new to the world of Cleveland motors, this book is very good to get you up to speed. If you've read other Cleveland books, searched for 351c parts, read forums to find the best combinations, you probably won't learn much from this book. However the book summarizes aftermarket parts very good, including stroker motors, heads, and fuel injection. The visual illustrations are also very good and enjoyable to look at.
I knocked off a star because I was expecting more technical information on building performance 351 Clevelands. Half of the sample builds at the end of the book were for the 400 Cleveland. Those were still greats reads, in fact the 400 builds went through quite a few variations swapping cam, intake, carb, with multiple dyno runs. I would have liked to have seen this much work on the 351c builds, or more 351c sample builds. There was some part swapping for the 351c, but nothing like was done for the 400. The end of the book left me feeling it should be called "Ford 400 for Max Performance", but it probably wouldn't have sold as good
Overall it is a good book. I'm glad we have a modern book on Clevelands and I'm happy to add it to my collection.
