Gathering Strength:, by Peggy Kelsey

Professional photographer, Peggy Kelsey traveled to Afghanistan in 2003 and 2010 to photograph and interview women. In Gathering Strength, Conversations with Afghan Women these interviews come together under different topics creating conversations that illustrate the women's different stories, concerns and issues. The various perspectives help readers make sense of seemingly intractable social issues in a similarly intractable nation. Peggy's own story and comments serve as a bridge between the reader and Afghan women. Dynamic, candid photographs reveal the infinite variety of women who are too often portrayed as an homogenous mass. Although the book addresses intractable issues and situations that the women face, it is ultimately hopeful.

Review
"Gathering Strength: Conversations with Afghan Women" is a comprehensive, non-fiction compilation of the past and present experiences of the women of Afghanistan. The book begins with a detailed account of the history of Afghanistan as well as its geography. The majority of the book is then comprised of interviews conducted by the author, Peggy Kelsey. The author interviewed Afghan women across all spectra of education, socio-economic status and age. The reader is engulfed with stories about women's rights and how they have changed, what education is like in Afghanistan and the effects of the Taliban on women, among many other issues. This book is complete and detailed about all things pertaining to Afghan women.

As a person who takes great interest in the rights of women, I found this book to be extremely interesting yet heartbreaking. The author does an amazing job of writing the women's stories in a manner that touches your heart. You can't help but feel for these women. However, Kelsey also interviews Afghan women who are leaders and are working to change the dynamics in Afghanistan, so the conversations aren't all negative. In fact, many are quite uplifting. After reading and digesting this book, I believe that "Gathering Strength" would be the perfect supplement to a college level course studying the subject. It would also be an excellent book for anyone who is interested in learning more details about the lives of Afghan women, past, present and future.Reviewed by Laura Reynolds for Readers' Favorite

Extraordinary, fascinating and invaluable!
By Tom Hyre
Peggy Kelsey has done something miraculous. "Gathering Strength" isn't just a gripping compilation of remarkable interviews; it is the single most useful modern volume I have yet seen for Western audiences on the subject of Afghanistan in general, and Afghan women in particular. If you're at all interested in Afghanistan or the situation for Afghan women, whatever your existing level of expertise, this book is indispensable. The historical preface alone is the most succinct and cogent summary of the necessary prerequisite context I've seen in a long while; that much alone should be mandatory for anyone going to Afghanistan for development or diplomatic work.

"Gathering Strength" is thus especially helpful for the Western layman looking for an accessible, comprehensive introduction to these subjects. The ongoing Afghan crisis can seem dauntingly complex, understandable only after one has a firm grasp of the vast, millennial history of the region and the bewilderingly alien culture (or rather, cultures) it has produced, as well as the decades of shadowy, often-sordid geopolitics culminating in the present intervention. Ms. Kelsey, however, provides all the necessary historical and cultural context without veering off-topic or resorting to so much as a single line of the sort of dense, impenetrable prose into which such efforts so often seem to descend. She provides the information you need, where and when you need it, to construct an accurate, digestible narrative.

Likewise, for most Westerners, sussing out the present reality in Afghanistan usually involves navigating a trackless ocean of undifferentiated good and bad information. What we hear about Afghanistan comes from a noisy, inchoate din of communication from national and international bureaucracies, swarms of charities and non-governmental development organizations, and scholars and public officials in Afghanistan and around the world, all with their own agendas (and, shall we say, starkly varying levels of reliability and benevolence), and all presented to the public by way of baldly inadequate media coverage. Again, "Gathering Strength" to the rescue. Here, we are offered a precious thing: simple, direct, authentic communication from people on the ground, who share a wide variety of experiences and perspectives. Pay particular attention when interviewees are asked, "What would you like to say to the American people?" There is also a brief "Glossary of People, Places and Organizations" which alone is worth more than the asking price.

Finally, perhaps the greatest barrier to learning more about the women of Afghanistan is simply that it can be so exhaustingly sad. These people (male and female, but especially female), have struggled for years - in some cases decades - against unspeakable violence, utter deprivation, and an unending litany of mind-numbing personal abuse and tragedy that beggars civilized imagination. It's important to grasp this unavoidable reality, and Ms. Kelsey does not shy away from it; here, though, we also see that there is another vital half to this story, a part that is generally not transmitted to Western audiences: enduring hope. As expressed in the book's exquisitely chosen title, the Afghan people are still alive, and so is their aspiration toward a peaceful and prosperous future, howsoever distant, in which their children and grandchildren can redeem the wasted potential of two generations consumed by war. The message from the awe-inspiring women of Afghanistan comes through loud and clear: "We're still here. Don't give up on us."

Having lived and worked in Afghanistan myself, and having worked with many Americans involved in the reconstruction effort (both in private enterprise and under official auspices), I can't think of a single non-Afghan I've encountered whose work wouldn't have benefited mightily from the information and perspective to be found in the pages of "Gathering Strength." Eminently readable but not glib, comprehensive but not overwhelming, frank but not brutal, hopeful but not naïve, this is your one-stop introduction to, and survey of, the real people of this critically important, deeply troubled country. It's also a chance to get to know some of the most astonishingly courageous individuals you're ever liable to meet.

Thank you, Peggy Kelsey!

Reading the book for this review brought me into the lives of Afghan women who I would not have had the pleasure of knowing.

The author, in the very first sentence of the Preface, sums up the presumption we make about Afghan women.

"In the Western world, the media has led us to think of Afghan women as an homogenous group with one outlook and one set of generally horrific experiences."

This book proves the opposite. Yes, there are some terrible experiences, and some major cultural differences, but so too, there is much strength, courage, and determination in the women interviewed that the world needs to know. What many often forget is that each person everywhere is a unique individual, and in all situations, each will respond uniquely. When people can speak to other people about their lives, experiences, hopes, desires and goals, stereotypes are demolished, Only then can differences be addressed from a mutual place of respect, and in this way, all of humanity benefits.

For example, Laila, an engineer in the City of Kabul Urban Planning Department, explains why she asked the author to interview her. "I wanted to talk about the problem of domestic violence. I want to say that just because some is educated doesn't mean that they don't experience violence. Even educated women have a lot of problems. Also, we cannot say that men are the only cause of violence against women. Women also do it. One example concerns mothers-in-law. Many of them abuse their daughters-in law."

While Zainab, a Director of the Community Development Council, informs, "This country is very traditional, and changing the minds of these people will not happen overnight. We have to go step-by-step and make our people understand every woman's and every girl's right to education. Then, girls can help support their families, which will lessen the financial pressure on the family, and thereby lessen violence."

Setara, an Afghan woman writer, shares, "Afghan women and girls hide everything inside. They feel a mountain of pain and no way to struggle against it."

When asked what gives her hope, Setara states, "The struggle and hard work of the young generation, both women and men, give me great hope. ...I'm optimistic that there will be something good in our future. I grew up in war, conflicts, rocket, and fire; everything that was in Kabul. ...At that time I just watched. Now I write about it."

Maral, a young Afghan woman in her thirties, tells us, "Education in the only way to change the minds of people in a good way, but it takes a long time."

Photographs of these and so many other Afghan women interviewed add power to their words, their eyes especially giving readers a window into their lives.

The author added a glossary of words, as well as a glossary of people, places, and organizations at the end, to help readers understand better references made in the interviews. A bibliography, notes, and an index, with sections of frequently asked and reading group questions complete this exceptional book for more in-depth understanding.

A closer look at Afghan women
By Chestelle Samford
It seems that all most of us know about Afghanistan is war. The stories we hear about how women are perceived and treated make it seem as if the whole country is backward and uneducated. However, there is much more to the story. Many Afghan women have pursued and obtained advanced education and work outside the home. Granted, the culture there right now does not allow them the kind of freedom that we enjoy here in the US, but some have made great strides and now work to obtain education and basic human rights for all.

Peggy Kelsey, the author of this fascinating and well-researched book about Afghan women, spent a good deal of time in Afghanistan interviewing Afghan women from all walks of life. They range from very traditional women to some real mavericks.

Most of the interviewees allowed her to photograph them - Peggy is also an accomplished professional photographer - although some did not want their likenesses to appear in a book for obvious reasons. Their stories are captivating. Many have faced roadblocks to their education, but managed to do whatever it took to learn. Some have even persevered to obtain a medical degree. Others work in women's rights organizations or in education.

She covers women who operate openly to campaign for women's rights, as well as activists who, because of family opposition or privacy, work under the radar. Some of these brave women do whatever it takes to obtain rights for themselves and others in spite of strong opposition and possible death.

The book is an easy one for busy people to pick up at odd times because it's divided into small chapters with one to several interviews in each one. It is very readable and a must-read for anyone who would like a better understanding of what goes on in Afghanistan besides war. Highly recommended.
