Named "2014 Best Book by Small Publisher"—Catholic Press Association. There are very few benefits to the being the only man in the convent. There are fewer still being the only big brother to 250 boys in an orphanage. But if you keep busy, you stumble into opportunities to help. And if you're clueless, you don't know better than to attempt the improbable. And if you're clumsy, you trip over life's lessons at every turn. For more than 100 years, a small band of nuns have run Alpha Boys School in Kingston, caring for the abandoned, abused and delinquent boys of Jamaica. From 1984 - 1986, they allowed the author to share their world. He was one of many people during those years who lived on the periphery of the boys' lives, trying to help, and trying to understand. He saw the relationships the boys built with each other, which kept them from being completely alone in the world. Whether from the inside or the out, they all lived at the orphanage edge. All of the author's proceeds from this book go to support the work of the Mercy Sisters and the Jesuits in Jamaica. Well-wrought reflection on a volunteer experience among orphans in Kingston, Jamaica
By T. Curtin
Sullivan’s soulful memoir of the two years he spent in Jamaica’s gritty capital at a bare-bones orphanage for boys is told with truthfulness and grace. As an altruistic man in his early twenties, he wrestles with questions of his own motivation and usefulness at the orphanage yet remains prayerful (his beloved Prayer of St. Francis) and patiently open to the slow emergence of answers and meaning. Writing years after the fact, with children of his own, Sullivan has the increased clarity, wisdom, and perspective to fully understand all of the contours of the experience. His dialogue-rich, lyrical retelling is an extended reflection on the greatness of small moments and small acts of human compassion. While the orphan boys Sullivan portrays tug at our heart, we also root for the spirited, resourceful Sisters of Mercy who devote their lives to bettering the disadvantaged boys’ chances in life.

This book moves beyond a mere journal of Jay's experiences ...
By Stephen J. Quigley
This book moves beyond a mere journal of Jay's experiences in Jamaica as it provides a thoughtful context for the work he did with the kids and the profound impact they had on him. Especially compelling are his accounts of the sisters who run the orphanage. These nuns have business skills that any CEO would envy! There is much to learn from this book and much to be hopeful about what we all can contribute in some small way to address some of the wrongs in this damaged world.

Recommend this book
By Robert Fontaine
I had to read Raising Gentle Men for a class and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jay's story held me captivated throughout the book and I became invested in the stories of the boys at Alpha. The book really speaks to the growth one is capable of and the journey of making a path for yourself as a young person. Definitely recommend this book to anyone considering a year of service after college.
