At the age of 25, I was hit by a truck. A large industrial truck. Two years after that accident, when I was still coming to grips with how those few minutes were changing my life, I began to write this book.
It's not the story of how I've grown amid hardships. Instead, it's the vast story of God at work in the world, the Lover who has pursued his wayward Beloved across millennia despite hardships I can scarcely imagine. I tell this story because I don't think I'm the only person who needs to know that I'm part of a tale much bigger than the one that started on my birthday. My life is not an indie film in which I'm the director and the star. I'm a small but valued player in an epic masterpiece in which God is the Director and the Star. So are you.
The Bible is the definitive account of how God's epic unfolded from the creation of the world through about AD 100. It closes with a glimpse of the glorious finale that has not yet taken place. It's a huge help when I have to decide how to play a scene, or when I'm frustrated and want to quit. It's also a ripping good yarn.
I hope this telling motivates you to read the Bible itself with a sense of its flow, its drama, and above all its main character, who invites you to join him in scenes that I look forward to hearing retold at the end of days.

The Key to Context

Praise the Lord, I am so thankful that this book (which had been out of print for a long time) has been re-released. As a theologian, I cannot endorse this book strongly enough, to Christians who are hungry to understand the Word of God in context. Second to the Bible itself, I would recommend this book as a companion read, above anything else I can think of. Wendell Choy, Th.M, Ph.D I've heard of people who have read it in a single sitting because they could not put it down. Karen's writing style is easy going, vividly description, and high insightful, from a scriptural perspective. Be prepared for a string of "lightbulbs" to continually go off, as you're reading.

Biblical Truth That Reads Like a Novel

Story of Stories by Karen Lee-Thorp contains all the elements of a great novel: captivating characters, compelling plot, vivid settings, written in an easy-to-read, enjoyable style. However, this book is so much more than a great read. Although I've read the Bible through multiple times, I still learned quite a bit from Story of Stories. Particularly helpful was Lee-Thorp's chronological account of the kings and prophet of Israel and Judah; finally, I have a grasp of where everyone fits and the events surrounding the prophesies. But there was so much more . . . God's preservation of the line of Judah; the emotion-packed crucifixion and resurrection; the transformations of Christ's followers and the subsequent spread of the Gospel; the hope Christians have both now and in the life to come. I could go on, but suffice to say, I am thankful to have read Story of Stories, and I plan to give several copies as gifts.
Story of Stories is a great way for persons unfamiliar with the Bible to get a big-picture understanding. In addition, it is also a valuable resource for those who know the Bible but want to read the story of God's love for us and His plan of redemption as it unfolds from Genesis to Revelation.

After you read this, the Old Testament and God's personal relationship with us will make sense!

This is the single most important book I've read (besides the Bible Itself) in solidifying my personal relationship with God and Christ. Karen manages to synthesize the often seemingly random stuff in the Old Testament with a linear, logical, humorous, and sometimes sorrowful story-line that is most likely very close to the actual truth from the perspective of the God that I know. Where the new Testament is concerned, I've never needed much other than the original four Gospels, but her work gave me a new appreciation for the additional books that follow the new Testament. This book is truly an inspired (and inspirational) work.
