Thomas J. Wood, Kentuckian, graduated fifth in his West Point class in 1846 and joined the staff of General Zachary Taylor. The Mexican War was just beginning and Wood fought in several battles after which he served under General Winfield Scott in Mexico City. In 1861, Wood became a brigadier general of volunteers and began his Civil War service with the Army of the Cumberland, with whom he fought in every campaign and most of its major battles. Wood has never before been the subject of a full length biography but is well known for a notorious lapse of judgment resulting in a Confederate breakthrough at Chickamauga that shattered the Union right flank and threatened the survival of the Army of the Cumberland. It is a moment in the war still argued about. Wood learned from his mistake, became a better general from that time on (notably at Missionary Ridge and Nashville), and redeemed himself in the eyes of his fellow officers and his civilian superiors.

'Dan Lee, author of Kentuckian in Blue: A Biography of Major General Lovell Harrison Rousseau and The L&N Railroad in the Civil War: A Vital North-South Link and the Struggle to Control It, gives us a look at a Union general who helped create the disaster at Chickamauga, but the redeemed himself on other fields. At Chickamauga on Sept. 19, 1863, Wood (1823-1906), a West Pointer who rose to major general during the war, followed an order he knew to be in error, opening a hole in the Union lines through which James Longstreet's troops promptly poured, sparking a major disaster to the Union forces and ever afterwards blighting his career. In this first ever biography of Wood, Lee opens with a look at his early life, education at West Point, and service in the Mexican War and the Old Army. He then takes Wood into the Civil War, during which he proved himself many times, before Chickamauga. Lee then carefully examines the circumstances for Wood's "failure" at Chickamauga. He concludes that the decision to obey the order resulted from a very blistering public dressing-down Wood received just a few hours earlier for questioning an order from Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans. The result was the retreat of the Union forces, Rosecrans' relief, and a nimbus over Wood for the rest of the war. Nevertheless, Lee argues, this made Wood a better commander, an idea confirmed by his subsequent good service under William Sherman and George Thomas. An excellent book about a rather marginalized figure in the war, which casts fresh light on the events at Chickamauga.'
