Very helpful view of Hawaiian culture of the early 19th century by a well-educated person familiar with Pacific Islanders (he actually discussed orthography). For a person of his generation and Western presuppositions, he's not as critical of the society as many of the Boston mission workers. His descriptions of the environment and his overall knowledge make this journal quite instructive.
